Mishna Brachos: Shema - Twice a Day Every Day

The first three chapters of the Mishna (tractate Brachos) detail the practices about saying the "Shema". It is basically one sentence that says, "Hear O Israel, Hashem our God, Hashem is one", (Deuteronomy 6:4). The idea is that there only exists one God and it is the God of Israel. In Jewish thought its recitation is reckoned as a declaration of acceptance of the yoke of heaven. In other words the person is saying that they believe in God, that the Torah is His revealed will, and they wish to live according to its precepts.

Towards the end of the second chapter the Mishna states that a groom is excused from saying Shema on his wedding night. The Bartenura explains that if a man married a girl, who is assumed to be a virgin, he is likely to be anxious that this may be found to be untrue. Because of his impaired concentration, it will not be a true affirmation of the faith. It then tells a story of the great Talmudic sage Rabbi Gamliel and that he in fact did say Shema on his wedding night. When questioned by his students as to why he did not keep this halacha, he replied that it would bother him to behave like others and to annul the acceptance of the kingdom of heaven on himself even for a moment. The Mishna continues saying that this is an unusual situation and that most people do not have the faith of Rabbi Gamliel.

The established practice is to say Shema twice a day, once in the morning and again in the evening. Like other parts of religious services it is very repetitive. For example Psalm 145 is said three times a day as are parts of the Amida. Other prayers are said once a day, once a week, or once a year. Some are said due to specific infrequent events. The first chapter of "Ethics of our Fathers" brings various sayings in the names of a number of Talmudic sages. It is explained that they said many things of value. However, these aphorisms were frequently on their tongue and captured their personalities. In fact it is common for people to be repetitive. They will restate things they find interesting many times at regular intervals. Also they will read books and periodicals which are always saying the same thing albeit with minor variations.

The daily liturgy is not short. There are some things that a person will say by rote or even skip. Other things will be said with feeling every day because they strike a responsive chord in a particular individual. Sometimes a person will not feel comfortable if they don't say them. There is also an aspect of a national consciousness which shows up in the liturgy, even if not everyone says it. So to speak every morning and evening the Jews are preaching to each other and the world too, that there is one creator, He is constantly giving existence to all things, and this is the God of Israel, who is portrayed in the Five Books of Moses our rabbi.

Behaaloscha - Taking the Land of Israel

Parshas B'haaloscha basically contains three themes. It starts with the commandment on the cohanim to light the menorah which is a continuation of the establishment of the Temple, as is the investiture of the Levi'im as a sacred tribe. It contains the mitzvah to observe a make-up Passover seder if one was unable to properly observe the first one on the appropriate date, which is a continuation of the giving of the law. It also continues the theme of the preparations for entry into the Promised Land which was started with the census of draft age men which is the first topic in the book of Numbers.

Entry into the Holy Land is intertwined with misdeeds of the people of Israel in the desert. The story starts when the cloud of glory, symbolizing the presence of God, began to travel. Moshe rabenu, sounds the trumpet for the people to go on a journey. The tribes properly march and the tabernacle is properly packed. After that the problems start. Jethro, the high priest of Midian, who is Moshe's father in law decides to return to his nation. Moshe tries to persuade him to stay saying that he is needed as a guide in the wilderness and he will share in the good fortune of Israel, but his attempts are not successful. Next the people start whining that the manna is no good even though it is fine. After that Miriam and Aharon berate Moshe.

All three of these mishaps have aspects of rejection of the land of Israel, and what follows immediately in parshas Shelach is the incident of the spies in which the nation explicitly rejects the Holy Land. Yisro openly chooses to return to Midian and not enter the land of Israel. In the case of the manna it is more subtle. The taste of the manna was an expression of the soul, and one of the key aspects of the land of Israel is that it puts a person in touch with his soul.

In the case of what is often called the "loshen hara" or Miriam, objects that Moshe separated himself from his wife Zipporah.  She questions its necessity as she and Aaron also talk to God and they were not called upon to do this as well. HaKadosh baruch Hu reacts with anger; not because of the basic topic, rather because they did not fear Moshe. The idea is that Moshe is the chosen, trusted servant of the Almighty, and that one should be concerned about the treatment of the servant of the king, lest they offend the king himself.

An aspect of the land of Israel is greater revelation of Hashem. Plus the land of Israel is more associated with Hashem and often called His country, therefore He is more meticulous about human conduct there. As a result there is greater concern about keeping his mitzvahs, and greater concern about reward and punishment. When approaching Israel from outside these ideas become more greatly illuminated causing a confrontation with truth and a confrontation with self.

Outside of Israel a person can be a proud Jew and careful about keeping the mitzvahs, but nevertheless harbor some desires to leave the fold. They may think the mitzvahs are cute and they love them but they can stop doing them if it suits them. Coming face to face with Israel drives home the idea that mitzvahs are an inescapable obligation and indeed that is what a Jew's life is all about. In addition it is going to be like that for all generations. For some that is a beautiful idea. However for others even great leaders, it may cause them to stumble.

Deep down inside the Jews is the feeling that the land of Israel is priceless everlasting heritage. Perhaps the easiest part of making aliya is getting on the plane. However the emotional barriers to coming with a one way ticket may be quite considerable. Parshas Bechukosai comes to reveal the feelings we should expect and overcome on out way to our destiny in the Promised land.

Naso - Suspicious Situations

Parshas Naso contains the laws concerning a woman who is suspected of adultery. The basic situation is that her husband becomes very jealous of his wife. However there is a genuine question as to whether she has secretly had an affair or there is no basis for this suspicion. In such a situation among other things she is to be brought to the Temple where she is to drink water mixed with dust from the floor of the Temple. She must agree to a curse that if she did commit adultery her thighs will fall and her stomach will become swollen. If in fact she has done nothing then the curse will not be effective and she will conceive a child. The basic idea is to effectively invoke prophesy to clarify a very difficult situation.

In the Tanakh this is not unusual. When Rivka, our matriarch, experiences a difficult pregnancy, she inquires of Hashem and receives a direct answer. When Saul is searching for his father's lost donkeys, he asks the prophet Samuel for guidance. In many other instances a prophet is asked to give the people the decision of God. However, shortly after the building of the second Temple, prophecy ceased.

The Talmud interprets the passage on the suspicious husband differently. It essentially sees the wife as being overly familiar with a man who is not her husband. She is even alone with him after her husband has explicitly told her not to do so. Therefore it is very logical to believe she has in fact committed adultery, even though she was not caught in the act. Consequently, she is given a trial by ordeal, where strong efforts are made to get her to confess. If she does not confess and the curse does not occur, plus she gives birth to a boy; it is assumed she did not in fact commit adultery, even though her behavior was very bad.

It is appropriate to meditate on the Torah and use its stories as allegories. To interpret this for the good a new idea can be compared to an embryo. At times a new idea comes into the world and it is a good one. However people reject it and malign it. They say all sorts of terrible things about it that it is apostasy and will drive a person insane. They behave towards it like they would towards a woman unjustly accused of adultery. Wild accusations are made against the people who adhere to it and they are subject to a trial by ordeal. Nevertheless they cling to their position. Once the good idea bears fruit, its goodness is apparent and it is accepted by all.

Shavuos - Celebrating our Standards

The sixth of Sivan is the holiday of Shavuos. It is mentioned a number of times in the Chumash as the festival of weeks and the festival of the first fruits. The Talmud makes a calculation which shows that it was the date that the Holy One blessed be He spoke to the nation if Israel on Mount Sinai and told them the Ten Commandments. The prayer book gives it the appellation of the giving of the Torah.

The Ten Commandments are of supreme importance. They simply and concisely give a person a code of conduct and focussing on them results in a moral compass. Not to steal or murder is obvious. Even so, there are those that go astray often to their own detriment. These standards can also be at the root of honesty and peace. Even for a promiscuous person, there should be limits and a start would be respecting the exclusivity in marriage. Looking at it wider provides thought for proper physical conduct. A person should always be truthful, however the standard should be higher in a court proceeding or when a promise is given.

Respect for parents safeguards the most basic of human relationships. It's important to take a day off from work to rest and use it in the pursuit of religion. Religion should be taken seriously, and one should have basic and exclusive faith in God.

The point is that there is something in a man that requires external standards and it is important that they be rooted in religion. For some they are a matter of morality. For others it is a matter of sanity. It is important for them to be on a person's mind all the time and be used when evaluating a situation and arriving at a decision. Without them we are lost. For this reason there is ample reason to celebrate the receiving of the law.
