Lag B’Omer - Transitions

Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berditchev in his book Kiddushat Levy (ס"פ ויצא) sees a hint of Lag B’Omer in the verse, “And Ya’akov called it Gal-ed”, (Genesis 31:47). The first two letters of the word גַלעֵד are גל which are the same letters which begin the festival ל"ג בּעוֹמֶר. The context of the verse is that Jacob is fleeing from his father in law, Laban, in Paddan Aram, and returning to his home and family in the land of Canaan. They do have an angry confrontation but separate in peace.

Rabbi Levi Yitzchak notes that the counting of the omer is the period between the parting of the Red Sea and the giving of the Ten Commandments. He takes the position that initially the nation of Israel was mainly paying attention to the parting of the Red Sea but their attention shifted as they came closer to Mount Sinai, and that the transition point was Lag B’Omer.

The inherent nature of Lag B"Omer is that it is a transition. From the Biblical standpoint the counting of the Omer was considered a happy time. It was kind of like a long Chol HaMoed linking Passover to Shavuot. However, later on there was a plague that claimed the 24,000 students of Rabbi Akiba. It raged until the 33rd day of the omer. Therefore those days are considered as days of mourning. As such listening to music is forbidden and one does not trim the hair in order to look a bit downtrodden. These sad days end on Lag B’Omer, which became a happy day on  which the brilliance of the great Talmudic sage Rabbi Shimon bar Yochoi is remembered. In addition people are enlivened by the approach of the happy holiday Shavuot.

Rabbi Levi Yitzchak compares the parting of the Red Sea to training a child to go to synagogue. In the beginning the child will often like musical liturgy and listen to the rabbi’s sermon, but the favorite part is the cookies and soda given out after the services. However, the purpose of the miracles was so that the children of Israel would recognize the Creator and should desire to make His service their life’s work. On Shavuot the nation of Israel started to learn the laws of how all people should behave towards each other. This was the objective. So to speak, the Lag B’Omer of a person’s life is when they become wise and mature enough to go to shul primarily to learn Torah even though they still enjoy the refreshments.

Rabbi Levi Yitzchak also notes that the word גַלעֵד (Gal-ed) ends with the word עֵד which means testimony. The idea in the Chumash was that this pile of rocks (גל) should be a testimony (עֵד) that when traveling to visit each other that it should be in peace. The Torah is also called a testimony (עֵדוּת) and the Jews are its witnesses (עֵדִים) and the message is that there is a G-d in heaven and these are the laws which will guide a person to peace.

Israel Independence - How are We Doing?

There is an ongoing debate, often angry, among orthodox Jews concerning the legitimacy of the modern state of Israel. The source is a story in the Babylonian Talmud in Gemara Ketubot page 111b. It takes place around 4130 of the Jewish calendar which corresponds to 370 of the modern calendar. This would be around 300 years after the destruction of the second Temple, 700 years after the prophet Ezra led the Jews back to Judea, and slightly before the fall of Rome. While there was a major community in the land of Israel, the one in Babylon was larger with major yeshivos.

The story is part of a larger discussion with many flowery praises about living in Israel, although there are opinions that it is better to live in Bavel because of its excellence in religious scholarship. In it Rabbi Zeira, a Talmudic sage living in Babylon, decides to move to the land of Israel. Because of this, he avoided his teacher, Rav Yehuda, who held that Jews should not move to Israel. The Gemara then cites a homily that the Jews were adjured not to come to Israel like a “wall”, meaning they should not try to militarily conquer it. Its source is the verse in the Song of Songs, “I adjure you, maidens of Jerusalem, By the deer or antelope of the field: Do not wake or rouse the love until it is desired”. The idea is that moving to the land of Israel arouses G-d’s love, but if G-d is not in the mood for love, it will instead arouse anger.

This is part of a discussion called the Shalosh Shavuot (שלוש שבועות - The Three Oaths). The another one is for the Jews not to rebel against the nations in which they have been exiled and the final is for the nations not to greatly persecute the Jews. There is a second opinion which adds another three oaths: 1) not to reveal when the messiah will arrive, 2) not to delay the arrival of the messiah by sinning, but some say that they should not pray excessively for the redemption, and 3) not to calculate the date when the messiah will arrive.

The unified meaning of this passage tends to be nebulous with the issue of force and the coming of the messiah particularly being controversial. There are two opposing positions. One is that of Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook who was the first Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of British Mandatory Palestine. He is considered to be one of the fathers of religious Zionism, and is known for founding the Mercaz HaRav Yeshiva. The opposing point of view was enunciated by the Satmar Rebbe Joel Teitelbaum in his book Vayoel Moshe (Moses consented - ויואל משה). In it he said that only the messiah could set up a Jewish state, that any military force was forbidden, and this specifically applied to the modern state of Israel. The position of Rav Kook evolved into a school of thought called Atchalta De'Geulah (Aramaic: אתחלתא דגאולה - the beginning of the redemption). It took the position that force was indeed justified as a response to the Holocaust and that through the United Nations the nations had given the land of Israel to the Jewish people. More generally it held that the coming of the messiah was a process that would involve war. There were also claims that the crypto position of Satmar was an objection to a secular state and that the crypto position of the Zionists, both secular and religious, was in fact militarism. A subtle underlying issue was a debate if there was a mitzvah to live in Israel. Rabbi Moshe Feinstein took the position that while there was no obligation to live in Israel nevertheless a Jew who does so is credited with a mitzvah.

There is a miracle story of Rabbi Yosef Tzvi Dushinsky, who was the Chief Rabbi of the Edah HaChareidis religious court of Jerusalem during the war of independence. In it the Zionist militia battling for Jerusalem was down to its last day of food. Ben Gurion, its commander, not wanting to be the one to abandon the city, asked Rabbi Dushinsky what to do. To his surprise the response was to eat three quarters of the food that day and save one quarter for the next. The Hasidim laughed at him saying what difference would one day make? Unexpectedly on that day an armistice was agreed to conceding the Old City to Jordan and putting the religious neighborhood, Meah Sharim, into the State of Israel.

So where does this leave us today? Economically the state has been successful. Socially there are many problems. The role of religion and perhaps even what is religion remains to be resolved.

Amos 9:7-15 - Sifting out the Stones

The Haftarah (Ashkenaz) for parshas Kedoshim (Leviticus 19:1 - 21:4) is Amos 9:7 - 15. It is commonly known by its first words הֲלוֹא כִבְנֵי כֻשִׁיִּים, literally are you not like the children of Cush. Cush is a Biblical expression for black Africa and here it compares black slaves, who often served their entire lives, to the children of Israel, who serve the Holy one blessed be He for their entire lives. Amos was active about 100 years after Elijah the prophet. He was from the southern Kingdom of Judah but preached in the northern Kingdom of Israel.

The haftarah opens with a statement of G-d’s power saying just like He brought the Philistines from Crete and the Arameans from what is today Iraq, so too He brought Israel out of Egypt. Amos then says in the name of G-d that He will destroy the current regime but will not totally destroy the people of Israel. Rather the nation will go into exile. There they will be purified like grain is sifted in a sieve. In ancient times wheat kernels were separated by having a bull trample the cut plants. Consequently the kernels were mixed with stones that had to be sifted out. The prophet compares the sinners of Israel to pebbles and condemns them to be killed in war especially if they said that disaster would not approach them.

The Talmud reckons being hard as a rock as an aspect of evil. Generally being tender is considered good and being harsh is considered bad. Specific sins are not mentioned here. Common complaints are rejection of the five books of Moses and the words of the prophets of the day. Other sins boil down to violations of the Ten Commandments.

Those that learn the lessons of the exile will be returned to the land of Israel. Israel will be the leader of the nations. The dynasty of King David will be restored in full glory. The nation will be rebuilt and prosperous and the people will never again be uprooted.
