Balak - The World to Come

In parshat Balak, Balak the king of Moav and Bilaam seek to curse the children of Israel and destroy them. In all cases HaKadosh Baruch Hu forces the wicked prophet Bilaam to utter a blessing. The first time he says, ”How can I damn whom God has not damned, How can I doom when the LORD has not doomed?” He describes Israel as an isolationist nation that is not involved in the affairs of other nations. He praises them saying, “Who can count the dust of Jacob and . . . the matings of Israel”. Bilaam sees Israel from a distance and hopes that his end will be like theirs (see Numbers 23:7-10). Dust is a symbol of humble helpfulness because it is lowly and grows things. Matings here is an expression of beauty in sexuality and of family.

The second blessing Hashem begins with a barb using saying the word fake (ויכזב) which is really what Bilaam is and wants to do. Hashem continues that He doesn’t see malice or vice in Israel nor do they use trickery, which are things that Bilaam and Balak are guilty of. On the contrary they are like lions with the herald of heaven in them. In the third blessing Bilaam praises the homes and places of study of the nation of Israel (Numbers 24:5). He said this because he saw that the entrances of their tents were not exactly facing each other (Bava Batra 60), therefore they were respecting each other's privacy. Finally Bilaam gives a prophecy that a star with a powerful rod will come out of Israel but it will not happen soon.

The conclusion of the parsha though is seriously different. In it the nations of Moav send prostitutes into the Israelite camp. The intention is that HaKadosh Baruch Hu will be angered at Israel when they become promiscuous. The plan succeeds and 24,000 die in a heavenly declared plague. However it stops when Pinchas, the grandson of the high priest, in a fit of religious fanaticism, impales a royal couple who were blatantly licentious.

The haftarah from the prophet Micah expands on these themes. It starts by saying that a remnant of  Israel will be in the midst of the nations. The idea of a remnant is that there will be a bloody weeding out of Israel until they reach their destiny. They will be like dew and droplets on plants meaning they will help humanity greatly but in a way that is barely noticed. On the other hand they will be like a young lion that nobody dares to provoke. To achieve this they will abandon faith in physical power and trickery. Nature also will be seen as a tool of G-d and not the ultimate independent force. Religious devotion will not be seen as an act of self flagellation. Rather Israel will have highly developed standards of right and wrong, will love to be kind, and be modest in terms of displays of religion.

Haftarah Chukat - The Story of Yiftach

This week’s haftorah is about the judge Yiftach. The story basically starts in Judges 10:6 and goes to 12:7 It says that the children of Israel did evil in the eyes of Hashem by rejecting Him and worshipping foreign gods. Consequently G-d has them persecuted by the neighboring nations particularly Ammon. Ammon was basically a tribe that was descended from Lot the nephew of Abraham. The general view of the Chumash towards them was that they were promiscuous and lacked the characteristic of gratitude. Israel is commanded in the Torah not to seek their good or peace.

There are literary difficulties in understanding this story. It contains what amounts to a continuing conversation between Israel and G-d. Specifically G-d is insisting on the exclusive worship of Israel and brings trouble upon them if they don’t. Israel prays to G-d when they are being persecuted and will even confess their sins and get rid of the foreign foreign gods, however only for several decades. This is presented as non-fiction. The idea of G-d speaking to anybody and prophets is very alien to modern thought. Secular Jews in dealing with this will babble about the theory of evolution. Orthodox Jews will say what commentary did you use and sometimes G-d spoke to Moshe and nobody else. Very few will understand the text based on what it is actually saying.

Here too Israel confesses, prays for deliverance from their enemies, and disposes of their foreign idols; and G-d is moved by their suffering. The story takes place in Gil’ad which is east of the Jordan River in the territory conquered by Moshe rabenu from Og and Sichon. The people there prepare for war and the only one capable of leading it is Yiftach. The problem is that he has been excommunicated and banished due to his illegitimate birth. Even so the people ask him to be their general and even agree to make him the leader.

The treatment of Yiftach is reckoned as a community sin because men ought not be blamed for their parentage, so long as their personal merits roll away any reproach. Although it is not explicitly stated, this seems to be a rectification of community shortcomings.

Yiftach begins the war by sending Ammon a letter asking why they are behaving in such a hostile and violent manner. They reply that Israel is on land stolen from them, when they left Egypt. Yiftach contests this. He makes an argument based on law and historical fact. The bottom line though is theological, namely that Israel is on the land Hashem gave them, they are on the land their god gave them, and that Hashem will make His judgement known through the results of the war he is about to launch against them. This makes no impression on Ammon and it seems like it was not expected to. Rather its target is Israel and its aim is to exhort them to study the Torah and live according to its precepts.

Yiftach is victorious in war, but the story is not over. Before going out to combat he makes a vow foolishly pledging that upon his return the first thing that comes out of the door of his house he will make into a burnt offering. This turns out to be his daughter who cheerfully welcomes him back. As I recall others made similar vows but what greeted them was an animal. True to his word Yiftach declares his intention to slaughter his daughter as a religious act. The whole thing is totally absurd as vows requiring forbidden conduct are invalid. To put it glibly the Chumash is explicit and meticulous about sacrifices. They only include cattle, sheep, goats, pigeons, flour, oil, wine, and frankincense. Other things can be donated to the temple and the kohanim will deal with them as they see fit. Shmuel the prophet, in fact, was donated by his mother as a servant to the high priest. Human sacrifice is considered an atrocity.

Some commentaries claim that Yiftach doesn’t actually kill his daughter, rather he puts her in seclusion in what amounts to a nunnery. There is scant scriptural support for this and the reasoning  amounts to sophistry. It looks like one of the many attempts to whitewash Jewish history because of small headed vanity. There is a discussion in the commentaries saying that Yiftach should have performed the prescribed rituals for the annulment of vows. In the absence of this, the high priest should have advised him to do so.

Things do not go well for Yitach. Next a troop of men from the tribe of Ephraim approach him with the declared intention of burning down his house with him in it, based on some frivolous reason. A pointless bloody civil war then ensues. Yiftach only judges Israel for seven years, then dies. The judgement of the Talmud is that he was not a good leader.

It’s a sad story. These seem to be its lessons. Abandonment and corruption of the Torah result in wars. Victims of social persecution will receive just compensation from heaven including the punishment of those that wronged them.

Trip Report - Tsafat (Safed -

I spent Shabbos parshas Shlach (שלח) in Tsafat (Safed צפַת). I had visited the city on my three trips to Israel as a tourist. On the last visit, when I was a student in Yeshiva Ohr Somayach, I was a guest of Shabbatai Kuben. After I made aliya I’d regularly be a guest of his for Shabbos. He was a big  talmid hacham (religious scholar - תַלמִיד חַכַם) who earned a living through his business selling very high quality lulavim (palm branches) for Succos. Sadly he passed away before 2000 and since then, I have made very few trips there.

My knowledge of Tsafat goes back to my childhood Jewish education in Congregation Beth Shalom. We learned of its mystical tradition, that is was the burial place of the composer of the hymn L’cha Dodi (לכה דודי) Rabbi Shlomo Alkabetz, its mountain pure air, and proximity to Mount Meron. Later on I read a fictionalized historical story set there in the book, “The Source” by Robert Michener.

The city goes back to Biblical times and probably predates the Patriarchs. It has a powerful allure and I felt it very young. A major battle was fought there during the War of Independence in 1948. Later the fledgling State of Israel set up an artist’s colony in the old city. The buildings there are often vacant, old, and being renovated. Many murals are painted on the walls and the artwork there in general is often reminiscent of my own compositions.

Tsafat is reckoned as one of the four holy cities in Israel which correspond to the four foundations; Jerusalem corresponds to fire, Hevron to dust, and Tiberia to water. Tsafat corresponds to air, which is especially apt.  The mystical tradition is omnipresent and can be felt in the pure mountain air. The landscape is quite beautiful. The atmosphere generally is very relaxing. There is a large yeshiva student population typically very idealistic. It is also home to many 1960 - 70s flower children (perhaps myself among them), many of which are single, who really influence the ambience

I was invited up to Tsafat by my friend Michael. We first met when I was a new immigrant. A common friend, Jack, had recently had a nervous breakdown. Another person in our group, Ben Tsion, took the two of us to see him and convey the message that if he needed any help, he should feel free to talk to us.

After that Michael invited me to his home for Shabbos many times. While living in Bet Shemesh, he built an addition to his home to be a studio apartment for his mother, when she was widowed and old. He served as chair of the building committee, which often is a chore requiring expertise. When his children got married, he moved to Tsafat, and rented out the place with me taking the smaller section. He was born in England and worked as a computer manager.

I had the honor of being his first Shabbos guest in his new place. We emailed each other about the arrangements. It was going to be something like the singles scene I was a part of on Manhattan’s upper West Side in the early 80’s. Thursday at 10:00 I started the trip, catching the 597 bus to B’nei Brak then transferring to 981 to Tsafat. It was pushing 2:00 when I arrived. The old city can be tricky and it had been years since I had spent time there, so Michael met me at the bus stop. We went out for a shwarma then I dropped my bag off at his place and rested up a bit.

We went shopping for Shabbat that evening and the next morning. Jerusalem Street is the central business district and there were stores down the street from his apartment. We got catered food and did some cooking. For services in the morning I went to Ari Ashkenazi shul. It had housed Rabbi Fivelson’s collel when it was one of my old haunts. In the evening I went to Breslav. Michael and I had a nice Shabbos meal in the apartment. The next morning he dovened at sunrise. I slept later and went to the mikva of the Ari then to the Bet Midrash of Shem v’Eber.

The Ari mikva is named after the prominent mystic Rabbi Yitzchak Luria (1534-1572). He lived in Tsafat and is reputed to have used it regularly. The source of its water is a pure underground spring that is constantly flowing. It is located on the edge of the ancient cemetery. According to religious lore taking dip in it is a segula (lure - סגוּלָה) for tshuvah (repentance - תשוּבָה). It is especially popular among yeshiva students, hasidim, and hippie types. All of this does make an impression on someone who goes into it.

The Yeshiva of Shem and Ever is prominently mentioned in the commentaries on the Bible, especially in the verse which says that Rivka, our matriarch, inquired of Hashem because of her difficult pregnancy. Rashi explains that this was the yeshiva of Shem the son of Noah (see Genesis 25:23). There are also Midrashim that say all three of the patriarchs learned there.

I took a break during services and asked the locals if the shul was the site of this yeshiva. I was directed to a large cave in the yard where they were having a large Kiddush. They explained that there was an ancient burial vault there but were generally hazy.

For Shabbos lunch we were guests of Michael’s friend Laurie. There were ten people at her table. There was one couple and the rest were unmarried around my age except for one college student. All of them were native English speakers. The large Shabbos table with many guests is a well known practice. The hosts that do it love it and cheerfully accept the honor that is rightfully heaped on them for doing so. It was a vegetarian health food meal with fish, cheese, a variety of salads, and copious wine. Following the popular practice, each person was asked to talk about themselves and whatever else was on their mind. Because politics can be quite sharp, its discussion was curtailed.

I used this as an opportunity to practice memory techniques to recall names. Two of the speakers did catch my attention. Susan was publisher of a local periodical and versed in the lore of Tsafat. I asked her about the cave of Shem and Ever. She proudly displayed her erudition and replied that according to local legend this is the actual site. She continued that it was notable as the first place human beings gathered on a daily basis for study. It would seem that there has been some archeological activity there, but I’d be skeptical about the position of the State of Israel Department of Antiquities.

There was another star gazer like myself. I commented that I had seen a bright star in the west at sunset and suggested that it was probably Venus. I was uncertain because, when low, it had a red tint. Phyllis, who apparently was following it, gave a positive identification and pointed out that stars as they get close to the horizon can turn reddish, often because of the atmosphere.

The next morning I took the “stairway to heaven” to the Ari Mikvah then dovened at the synagogue of the Sanz hasidim. It had minyanim scheduled every hour and was down the street from Michael. I used the morning to tour a bit and take pictures. Returning to the apartment, Michael and I said our goodbyes and thank-yous and I headed for the Safed Central Bus Station. To my surprise the 981 ran every two hours, unlike every half hour from B’nai Brak. Mercifully I only had to wait 45 minutes.

Towards the end of the trip I was able to use my tablet to join my family's weekly Zoom conference. I returned to my place in time to go to an engagement party. Unfortunately I was tired and conked out and didn't wake until the middle of the night. All in all it was a very nice trip and I wish Michael a יִשוּב טוֹב (Good stay or good town) in his new place.

Pirkei Avot - Practical Guides?

Does orthodox Jewish thought hold that the mitzvot are practical guides for human conduct? Very often it seems that the answer is no. For example it is written in the Talmud, “There is no reward for performance of a mitzvah in this world”, (see Gemara Kiddushin 39b). A common position in the beis midrash is like Rashi bringing the Sifra, “A man should not say I find it disgusting to wear garments of wool and linen, eat pork, or have relations with a married woman, but one should say, I would, indeed, like them, but what can I do since my Father in heaven has imposed these decrees upon me”. The implication seems to be that these things are basically harmless. This is said within the context of an exhortation for Israel to be a nation that is dedicated to G-d and is separate from the other nations. It also has a threat to turn them over Nebuchadnezzar and others like him if this is not so. All of this tends to be away to deal with the observation in the book of Ecclesiastes (8:14), “Exasperation exists in the world, like the righteous who get what the wicked deserve, and wicked that get what the righteous deserve; and even talking about this is exasperating".

In fact the claim that there is no reward for mitzvahs in this physical world is part of a lengthy debate based on the Mishnah which says, “Anyone who performs one mitzvah has goodness bestowed upon him, his life is lengthened, and he inherits the land, i.e., life in the World-to-Come. And anyone who does not perform one mitzva does not have goodness bestowed upon him, his life is not lengthened, and he does not inherit the land of the World-to-Come”, (Mishna Kiddushin 1:10). Also in Ethics of our Fathers (2:1) exhorts one to consider the loss caused by a mitzvah against its gain as well as the gain of a transgression against its loss. The Bartenura comments that this reckoning should apply to well-being in this world as well as the next.

In fact the mitzvahs are often divided into mishpatim (מִשׁפָטִם) and chukim (חוּקִים), often loosely translated as statutes and laws. The dichotomy is that mishpatim are considered as intrinsically logical such as not to rob or murder. Chukim are considered not to be greatly logical and may even cause derision. Examples are restrictions on shaving and purification from ritual defilement caused by contact with a corpse. The main reason they are kept is because they are decrees of the Almighty written in His Torah. Nevertheless the rabbis say that chukim typically have some aspect of logic in them and that mishpatim may not be entirely logical.

To this end the commandments can be looked upon as pieces of advice. For example if a person wants to have good human relations, a good start would be respecting parents and avoiding jealousy. A person will be happier and more relaxed if a break is taken from work every Saturday to enjoy the fruit of one's labor and tospend some time studying the sacred texts. A person’s mind will probably be more sound if he is generally truthful.

The idea is that mitzvahs are intrinsically beneficial because of their stated purpose. This idea is stronger for a benevolent person, who likes to contemplate things, and is willing to change opinions and practices that are shown to be faulty. However if a person is shallow and has a strong inclination towards evil then this idea is much weaker. In that case the best approach may be to do the mitzvahs because they are the decree of the King of the Universe lest he punish you in His indignation and vengeance.
