Bereshis - Pleasure Principle

The Chumash explains that when G-d made the world no plants had in fact grown. This is because there had been no rain and this was because there was no man to work the ground. Rashi implies that everything in the world was in anticipation of man.  When G-d breathed life into man then everything sprung up. After that G-d planted the Garden of Eden and placed man in it.

This is also the first time in the Bible that the four letter name of Hashem is used. During the story of the six days of creation only the name used is Elohim. The Tetragrammaton tends to be the essential name of the holy One blessed be He. It is often associated with the characteristic of mercy. The name Elohim literally means “powers” and is associated with the characteristic of law. The gematria of Elokim is 86 which is the same as the gematria of nature. The implication is natural law; for example chemistry, physics, and to a lesser extent biological instinct.

Mercy is a higher cerebral characteristic. It starts with consciousness and includes emotions such as kindness, love, concern, and fairness. If patience is added, one arrives at mercy. These are the attributes that man adds to this lower world. So to speak these are the qualities that Hashem really wants in the world. These are the breath of Hashem which gives a man life. For this there is rain. For this there are plants and animals. Without man all of the potentials concealed in the physical world are never truly realized.

The Chumash continues that man was placed in the Garden of Eden to work it and protect it. The Ibn Ezra comments that this means to water the garden and guard it so wild animals do not enter and dirty it. The word Eden (עֵדֶן) basically means delights but also includes connotations of being refined, polite, and tender.

Tikkuney HaZohar expounds on this idea commenting that it is a merit for a man to keep the faith in his heart and in word and that this is the craft of Israel. It is a unification of Hashem and particularly a merit when in exile. It notes that the Hebrew word for garden גן has a gematria of 63 which is the number of tractates in the Talmud. It also explains working the garden refers to the 248 positive commandments and protecting it refers to the 365 negative commandments. It comments they are the garden and delights of the Torah.

One learns from this passage that the focus of the world is the development of man. The vehicle for development is pleasure. However it is a pleasure which comes from bringing out the best in our surroundings as well as protecting them from harm. The tree of life is mentioned before the tree of knowledge of good and evil. From this we can infer that the first things a person should learn about are the things which make him physically and mentally healthy. At some point later it is appropriate to focus what is abstract right and wrong. The pleasures we enjoy should be pleasures that are refined and come along with being polite and compassionate. And the ultimate pleasure is knowledge of the breath of Hashem that is in us and seeing the beauty from above that surrounds us.

V’Zos HaBracha / Succos - Euphoria

In the Additional service (Musaf) Succos is given the appellation “the time of our happiness” (זְמַן שִׂמְחָתֵנוּ). This is in line with the holiday’s description in the Chumash, “Seven days you shall celebrate the Festival to the Lord, your G-d, in the place which the Lord shall choose, because the Lord, your G-d, will bless you in all your produce, and in all the work of your hands, and you will indeed (אַךְ) be happy”, (Deuteronomy 16:15). On the expression, “you will indeed be happy” Rashi comments that it is not a command rather it is an assurance from above that this holiday indeed will be a happy one. The Torah Temima brings the Talmud (Succah 48a) which uses the verse to rhetorically question if the later nights of the holiday are be included in this joy, or perhaps it is only the first day. It then answers that we should focus on the word “indeed (אַךְ)”, meaning that the entire holiday is to be a celebration.

In line with the attitude of this analysis there is a custom going back to ancient times to hold a party on Succos. It is called a simcha beit hashoeva שִמחַת בֵית הַשוֹאֵבָה and it refers to the celebration of drawing the water to be used as a libation in the Temple. In fact there is no specific mention of a water libation in the Chumash, the best that can be found is an oblique hint. The custom was to draw water with great ceremony from a natural stream in Jerusalem then pour it out at the base of the altar. This in turn was surrounded by a much larger celebration.

There are stories of old people who upon seeing the great joy of the Simcha Beit HaShoeva in the Second Temple would burst into tears because they remembered it’s much greater joy in the First Temple. The tradition is alive and well among the Haredim in Israel. In the synagogue there may be a live band, sometimes quite large, with vigorous dancing, and often with cake and soft drinks. The main Karlin-Stolin beis midrash in Jerusalem has one every night with thousands of participants. Toldos Aharon does likewise and even serves a light meal. Usually they are open to the public.

The Mishna (Succah 5) embellishes the idea of celebration greatly. It states that anyone who has not seen a simchas beit hashoeva has never seen joy in his life. The lamps were made out of gold and the light from the celebration were so bright that they lit up every yard in Jerusalem. Professionals and amateurs would bring musical instruments; stringed instruments, woodwinds, and brass. Rabbi Shimon ben Gamliel would juggle eight flaming torches. Levy would juggle eight knives. Shmuel would juggle eight glasses of wine before the king of Persia. Abaye would juggle eight eggs (some say four) before in front of his havrusa (study partner).
There was a ritual where two priests would blast the trumpets between 21 and 48 times as they ascended to the Temple courtyard. When they entered they would turn their faces to the west and say “Our ancestors when they were in this place turned their backs on the Temple and their faces towards the east and prostrated themselves towards the sun, but as for us we are for Hashem and our eyes are towards Hashem”, (Mishna Succa 5:4).

One begins to wonder what the celebration was all about. Succos was the main harvest holiday and that is the symbolism of the lulav and esrog. It’s understandable to celebrate a nice bonus but it does not really answer the question. The idea of living in a succah is the idea of remembering the exodus from Egypt and the entrance to the Land of Israel. So to speak we left a sweat shop job for a high salary, high status position with a comfortable office and banker’s hours. As a result the period in between when we lived in the equivalent of a large cardboard box was a happy time. It seems to be even more than that, though. The discovery of faith can bring a person to a new state of consciousness. For that there is euphoria especially if it can change the flood waters of Noah to personal financial security.

Haazinu / Yom Kippur - For the Sin We Committed Before You

A regular part of the weekday liturgy is a confession of sins. It contains a one word rhyming list of 24 sins that is according to the aleph beis with the last letter tripled. It is often general: “We have trespassed, we have been faithless, we have robbed, we have scoffed, we have rebelled, we have been malicious, we have erred, we have caused others to err”.

Yom Kippur is the Day of Atonement therefore another list is added which is much longer and detailed. It is 44 lines broken into three groups each ending with the refrain, “For all of them G-d of Pardons, pardon us, forgive us, atone us”. Each of the lines is in the form, “For the sin we committed against You in such and such”. For example, “For the sin we committed before You by the meditation in our heart”. “For the sin we have committed against you by the desecration of Your name”. “For the sin we have committed against You in eating and drinking”. “For the sin we have committed against You by casting off the yoke of the commandments”. These sins are easy to understand as sins against G-d.

However, there are sins, which seem to be substantially against one’s fellow man, for example, “For the sin we have committed against You by wronging our neighbor”. “For the sin we have committed against You by contempt of parents and teachers”. “For the sin we have committed against You by slander”. “For the sin we have committed against You by being cheap”. “For the sin we have committed against You by violence”. One can understand how the victim of these sins would be offended. However, why are they reckoned as sins against G-d to the extent we need to ask heaven for forgiveness? If the victim is conciliated that should be enough.

The biblical phrase “he will bear his iniquity” (שא עונו) gives some insight. It is used five times in the Chumash. One of them is in connection with the mitzvah of a peace offering. The basic idea of a peace offering is that it is a religious banquet. As such meat, which has been sanctified as a sacrifice, should be eaten at the banquet itself. Left overs are permitted but must be eaten the next day. To eat the meat on the third day or after is like using a celebration to do grocery shopping. There the Chumash brands it as an abomination and one who does it will bear his iniquity.

There are similar condemnations for those that eat blood, brother sister incest, remaining silent when one has relevant testimony, and ascending the Temple Mount in a state of ritual impurity. These can be viewed as victimless crimes or at least one where the injured party remains ignorant. However, the violator knows he did a bad thing. A sense of guilt comes from the violation of the faith. The person has become vile in the eyes of heaven.  Similarly with crimes where there is a victim, for repentance to be complete, the perpetrator must admit to his soul that the behavior was wrong. Certainly amends must be made to the damaged party, but it is not enough. One must recognize that there is a G-d in heaven, who is the master of the world, and who has been offended because he misbehaved at His party. In the עַל הֵטא (Ahl Chayt) we apologize to the Holy One blessed be He and in doing so make peace with the religion.
