Korach - An Obstinate People

In the parsha that bears his name, Korach leads a rebellion against Moshe rabenu. He is joined by Dathan and Aviram plus another 250 dignitaries. The rebellion had broad support among the general population. Korach covets the position of high priest because of its high status and his intention is to seize the position from Aharon. The 250 dignitaries are mainly from the tribe of Levy. Their intention is to abolish the position of high priest and have its functions broadly distributed, which would allow them to perform these functions as well.

Dathan and Aviram are simply troublemakers and rebels. If somebody wants them to do something they do the opposite, especially if it will arouse anger. The people of Israel do not particularly care about Korach one way or another, nor are greatly interested in performing the duties of the Cohen gadol. However the rebelliousness, obstinateness, and shrill language of of Dathan and Aviram does have broad appeal.

Korach and the 250 men are given their opportunity to compete against Aharon concern. All are to bring incense at the Tabernacle and HaKadosh Baruch Hu will choose the one He favors. Moshe tries to discuss the issues with Dathan and Aviram. Their response is to refuse to meet Moshe and instead to heap insults on him. HaKadosh Baruch Hu unsurprisingly chooses Aharon. He also burns to death the 250 pretenders. Korach, Dathan, and Aviram are swallowed up by the earth in a miracle that confirms their wickedness.

The reaction of the people is to accuse Moshe of killing the congregation of Hashem and to demonstrate against him. Hashem is ready to kill them all, but is calmed down when Aharon properly makes an incense offering. Going the extra mile HaKadosh Baruch Hu has the chief of each of the twelve tribes with Aharon representing Levy put their staffs into the Mishkan. The staff of G-d’s choice will bloom. The next day in front of everyone Aharon’s staff flowers and produces fruit. The reaction of the nation is to act like fools and big babies. They do end their antics and the rebellion is over.

The lesson is that there is a strong evil inclination to be provocative and obstinate. It can clothe itself in some sort of grievance which may or may not have some truth in it. Other times it masquerades as religion when in fact it is blatant denial or even worse a sacrilege. Rather a person should be polite, articulate, and accommodating. The Torah gives us Korach as a bad example and we should study him well so that we shouldn't be like him or his congregation. The good example is Aharon the Cohen Gadol as it is written in Ethics of our Fathers (1:12), “Hillel says be like the students of Aharon love peace, chase after peace, love the creation, and bring them close to Torah”.

Shelach / Micha 7:9-13 Mending Walls -- Far Off

In parshas Shelach Moshe rabenu sends out a delegation of the children of Israel to explore the Holy Land. The text of the Chumash is typically clear and focused, but here it tends to be vague and confusing. Things are out of place and suspicions are aroused. Upon reflection it has the tone of deception and a sinister ulterior motive. Initially it sounds as if this is meant to be a clandestine, military, reconnaissance expedition. However it hedges with a hint that the purpose is to establish whether the the land of Canaan is suitable to be the homeland of the nation of Israel. The fact that the people of Israel left Egypt to go there is ignored.

Once the spies reject the land things become more clear. HaKadosh Baruch Hu declares, “How long will this people spurn Me, and how long will they have no faith in Me despite all the signs that I have performed in their midst? (Numbers 14:11). In other words the rejection was rooted in scorn of religion and denial. The overwhelming majority of the nation share this point of view, but there is a segment of Israel which properly accepts the land of Israel. In addition the omniscient eye can see the next generation will not commit the same mistake. Therefore God declares, “According to the number of days, forty days, that you toured the land, a year for each day, you will suffer for your iniquity. Then you shall know what my frustration is. I Hashem have spoken. Thus will I do to that entire wicked mob that has ganged up against Me.  In this very wilderness they will die to the last man”, (Bamidbar 14:34-5).

The only incident worth reporting during the forty years is the rebellion of Korach plus a small number of mitzvahs are given. After that with the death of Mariam, the preparations for entering the the land of Canaan resume. It is a new generation, although far from perfect, it wishes to live in the Holy land. They are forced to fight wars against the Canaanites, the two Amorite kings, and the Midianites. They are also treated hostilely by Moav and Edom, who would be expected to be friends and allies. Through all of this they prevail. Their enemies are rashaim and not interested in the glory of heaven. Rather they are a rod in the hand of the Ribono shel Olam to punish the Jews.

The prophet Micha (7:9-13) describes this process of sin followed by partial repentance and forgiveness. The first verse is confession and faith, “I will bear the fury of the Lord, for I have sinned against Him, until He pleads my cause and executes justice for me. He shall take me out into the light; I will see His righteousness”. The next verse is satisfaction with the vengeance of heaven on the enemy, “My enemy shall see, and shame shall cover, her, the one who said to me, ‘Where is the Lord your God?’ My eyes shall look at her now that she has become trodden as the mud in the streets”. The next three verses recognizes that there will be a redemption, but until then there will be sin and suffering. “That day for the mending your walls, it is very far off. That day  to you they will come from Ashur and the fortified cities, and from the fortress until the river (Euphrates), and the Sea from the west, and Hor Mountain (burial place of Aharon). But the land will be a desolation for its inhabitants as the fruit of their exploits”.

The children of the desert generation will conquer the Holy Land and future generations will establish the throne of David and build the Temple. Much of this will be lost because of the sins of the nation. There will be a desolation but a remnant will remain. However after many, many years the proper lessons will be learned and this will usher in the days of universal peace.

Micha 4:1-7 / BeHa’alothkha The Glory of Teaching Torah

Parshas Behaloskha opens with HaKadosh Baruch Hu instructing Aharon, the Cohen gadol how to light the menorah on the holy Temple. It's a simple instruction namely that seven candles should be lit. The Chumash duly records that Aaron faithfully performed this task and that it was a beautiful menorah properly constructed according to the instructions given to Moshe rabbeinu when he was on Mount Sinai.

Rashi comments on this, “Why is the portion dealing with the menorah juxtaposed to the portion dealing with the chieftains? It is because when Aaron saw the dedication offerings of the chieftains, he felt distressed over not joining them in this dedication -- neither he nor his tribe. Therefore God said to him, “By your life, your [portion] is greater than theirs, for you will light the candles and incline them to good.” - [Tanchuma Beha’alothecha 3].

Lighting a candle is a Biblical metaphor for education. The idea here is that however great the rendering of glory to the Temple is, Jewish education is even greater. After all what is the Temple about, if it is not about how to properly live in the world created according to the will of God.
There is a similar Rashi concerning the laws in the Torah that are detailed immediately after the giving of the Ten Commandments. It states, “The Holy One, blessed is He, said to Moses: Do not think of saying, “I will teach them the chapter or a law two or three times until they know it by rote. However I need not trouble myself to have them understand the reasons behind the issue and its implications. Therefore, it is said: “you shall set before them”, meaning like a set table which a person is prepared to eat from — [From Mechilta, Eruvin 54b].

Micha 4:1-7 discusses knowledge of Torah and its connection to peace and blessings.  As it says: It shall be at the end of the days, that the mountain of the Lord's house shall properly be the head of the mountains, and it will be lifted above the hills, and nations will stream to it. Many nations shall go there and they will say, "Come, let us go up to the Mountain of Hashem and to the house of the God of Jacob, and let Him teach us of His ways, and we will go in His paths," for out of Zion shall the Torah come forth, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. He shall judge between many peoples and reprove mighty nations afar off; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nations shall not lift the sword against nation; neither shall they learn war anymore. They shall dwell each man under his vine and under his fig tree, and no one shall make them shake, for the mouth of the Lord of Hosts has spoken. For all nations shall go, each one in the name of his power, but we will go in the name of Hashem, our Power, forever and ever. On that day, says Hashem: I will heal the one that limps,  those that I pushed away I will gather, and those whom I harmed. I will make the one who limps into a living segment, and the weary one into a mighty nation, and Hashem shall reign over them on Mount Zion from now and forever.

The last Mishna in the Talmud, Uktzin 3:12, discusses the rewards of peace to the nation of Israel. As it says: Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi said: In the future, the Holy One, blessed be He, will bequeath to each and every righteous person three hundred and ten worlds, as the verse says, (Proverbs 8:21), "To bequeath substance [literally: 'yesh,' the numerical value of which is three-hundred and ten] to My loved ones, and I shall fill their storerooms”. Rabbi Shimon ben Chalafta said: The Holy One, blessed be He, found no vessel that can [sufficiently] hold the blessing for Israel, save for peace, as the verse says, (Psalms 29:11) "Hashem will give strength to His nation, Hashem will bless His nation with peace."

The point of all of this is that as great as honoring the temple is, learning and teaching Torah is far greater. The truth is that humanity has not even began to live. We are living in the days of prehistory. Man will start to live when the Jews have learned and kept the Torah so well that they can teach it to the entire world. Then there will be seventy gentiles hanging from corner of every Jew saying teach us the ways of the G-d of Jacob, for the Torah will come out of Zion and the word of G-d from Jerusalem. The first thing that they will be taught is that there is no need for them to kill each other when they have a dispute. Rather they can explain their difficulty to the holy rabbis in Jerusalem who will tell them how to peacefully deal with the situation. The second thing to be learned is the many, many worlds of delight that we cannot even imagine today.

Naso / Micha 1:7 - The Job of Israel

Parshas Bamidbar and Naso detail the duties of the three clans of the tribe of Levy. The cohanim are descendants of Kehoth but are considered a separate group. One of the jobs of the cohanim is to disassemble the Tabernacle, when it is to be moved, and to carry the ark which contains the two tablets of the Ten Commandments. The job of the Kohathites is to carry the other sacred objects and their utensils. The clan of Gershon is to carry the tarps and ropes. Merari is to carry the heavy beams, pillars, and bases. It is forbidden for one clan to do the work of another clan and at times a specific task is assigned by name to a specific person. In the Temple most of the duties of the priests was forbidden to be performed by a layman. The Leviim were to be gatekeepers and singers, and it was forbidden for them to exchange tasks.

When discussing the blessings given by Isaac to his two sons, Rabbi Uziel Milevsky at Yeshiva Or Somayach explained that Jacob was to be the scholar and social activist and Esau was to be the businessman and philanthropist. If Yaakov misused his excellence in ethics, Esav, was permitted to rebel. If Esau misused his wealth, Yaakov was permitted to work. The reason the blessing had to be stolen was to remind Yaakov that any money received from ordinary labor, to a certain extent was tricked out of Esav.

A similar sentiment is expressed in the Talmud. On the fast of the Ninth of Av a Jew should be in synagogue lamenting the destruction of the Temple and the tragedies that have fallen on the Jewish people throughout the ages. While ordinary work is not forbidden, Rabbi Akiba states that no benefit will ever be derived from its profit (see Taanit 30b).

The prophet Micha is much more trenchant about this idea. He rebukes the nation of Israel for idolatry, which in this case means acceptance of foreign values, customs, and occupations while rejecting HaKadosh Baruch Hu and His Torah. He states, “All of this trash will be pulverized, its gifts burnt, the aggravation a desolation for as a gift to a prostitute it was gathered and like a gift to a prostitute it will be returned”, (Micha 1:7). Trash and aggravation are pejoratives for the word idol. The Gemara (Avoda Zara 17a) comments on this verse that just as it came from a dirty place, it will return to a dirty place. In other words this is considered by heaven to be dirty money therefore it invites anger and destruction.

The idea is that the national mission of Israel is to bring holiness into a profane world, and this extends to each and every Jew. A Jew can be a computer programmer, truck driver, or doctor to support himself in order to engage in this sacred task. However if livelihood, science, or foreign culture become a pursuit for their own sake it is reckoned as an act of prostitution. Like the other prophets, Micha ends on an optimistic note. The errors of Israel are seen as a passing stage on the road to perfection. Israel will ultimately accept their true mission in the world. G-d will forgive them because He does not stay angry forever rather He delights in kindness and will show truth to Jacob and love to Abraham as He swore to our fathers in the days of old.
