Tazria-Metzorah: Removing the Evil

The double parsha Tazria-Metzorah deals with the Biblical malady of metzorah commonly called leprosy. It is not a disease in the conventional sense in that it is neither physically disabling nor painful. However it is either ugly or noticeable. The disorder takes the form of a spot which is protruding, ugly, or bright. In acute cases the spot looks as if it is beneath the surface and upon examination it spreads. Typically it has a black hair that has turned white, but there are exceptions. Sometimes it shows up on clothing or buildings.

In a light case the affected party is quarantined. If the situation does not deteriorate only bathing is required to restore ritual purity. In an acute case the leper is ostracized and stigmatized until the sore heals and he undergoes the appropriate purification rituals. There are also times a person has a sore which means nothing in regards to purity.

From the tone of the Chumash metzorah was not a rare condition and people commonly understood it. From the standpoint of today it has been many generations since anybody has seen it and generally people don't relate to it. It can be, also, that we do see it but do not recognize it. In any case the passage can easily be used as an allegory.

The word used for spot in loshon hakodesh is נגע (negah), a form of the word touch. It often refers to a whack or a knock, however, in this case the one afflicted is unbalanced or touched. A description of the condition is found in Psalm 89:31-33. "If his sons forsake My Torah and in My laws they do not walk, if My wishes they profane and do not keep My commandments. I will tend to their transgression with a rod, and their iniquity with stripes (ובנגעים)". The Gemara expounds this verse saying that there is no suffering without iniquity (Shabbos 55a). The idea seems to be that the leper has some bad ideas and has done some bad things therefore he should be shunned and scorned.

In some situations others genuinely may not be aware of the transgressions. In other cases the antics may be amusing causing a rasha to be lionized and imitated by others. The negah is a tipoff from heaven that this person has gone outside that which is acceptable. An illustrative story is found in Gemara Pesachim 3b. "There were three cohanim [discussing their priestly gifts]. One said I received something the like a bean, one said I received something like an olive, one said I received something the like a lizard tail. The checked him out and found a blemish in his lineage".

The parsha also will talk about curing the leper of his leprosy. What we learn from this, though, is that there are times unusual behavior will arouse suspicions. When this happens an examination by an expert is required. Sometimes something is there but it is not too severe and exposure is sufficient to make the necessary changes. Other times the situation is malignant and stubborn. In that case the violator must be expelled and disgraced.

Shmini: Religious Rapture

The first chapter (VaYikra 9) of parshas Shmini (eighth – (שמיני describes the investiture of Aharon as Cohen Gadol. This took place on the eighth day of the dedication of the Mishkan. Chronologically it follows after the narrative in parshas Pekuday. The Chumash however pauses to describe the various types of sacrifices some of which are to come when the story resumes. The inverstiture also runs concurrently with the account of the tribal inaugural offerings in parshas Naso (BaMidbar 7). A substantial amount of text in the Chumash is devoted to this topic and I'd say that it probably ends with the induction of the tribe of Levy into sacred service in parshas B'halosacha (BaMidbar 8). At that point the narrative segues into the entry of the children of Israel into the Holy Land.

The climax of the story of the Temple seems to be the installation of the High Priest. After Aharon is installed various sacrifices are to be offered in preparation for the appearance of Hashem to the nation, as it says in the Chumash, "for today Hashem will appear to you (Pl)", (VaYikra 9:4). The sacrificial rite is enumerated. A number of animals are brought on behalf of Aharon, the Cohen Gadol, and others are brought on behalf of the nation. Some are to be entirely consumed by the fire on the altar. The Chumash specifically mentions slaughtering them, sprinkling the blood, and describes their butchering in detail.

This entire sacrificial ceremony tends to leave the reader befuddled. However, based on tone and context, it is a joyous component of a very happy occasion. After the sacrifices are placed on the altar, Aharon raises his hands and blesses the nation, "May Hashem bless you and keep you, may He shine His face on you and give you grace, May He lift His face toward you and give you peace". Moshe and Aharon then enter the sanctuary of the Mishkan and upon exiting Moshe blesses the nation saying, "may the serenity of the L-rd our G-d be upon us, and the labor of our hands should benefit us, and the labor of our hands should be of benefit". At this point the glory of G-d appears to the people. Fire comes from before Him and consumes the sacrifices. The people see this spectacle then fall on their faces and shout in rapture. The whole scene is one of euphoria.

The difficulty remains as to how we are to understand the sacrifices. The Tanach clear sees them as generally adding enthusiasm to observance and in this case specifically. During the dedication of the Temple by King Solomon it is cheerfully recounted that the regular altar was too small to accept the burnt offerings and other sacrifices that were brought (Kings 1 8:64). A quandary is found in penitential Psalm 51. It concludes with the burnt offering that will be brought even though it earlier states that G-d does not desire sacrifices.

In truth the desire for blood rituals has passed. Many people find difficult the fourth chapter of Mesechta Tamid which details the butchering of the daily offering. So to has dimmed some aspects of the glory of a warrior. Many have difficulty with the passionate expression in the Psalm 110:6, "he will judge nations by filling them with corpses, He will crush many heads on the ground". Rather the prevailing attitude is that a victory that comes over a mountain of dead bodies cannot be celebrated. What does remains is the elation that comes to man from things that are not inherently holy.

A wedding provides an example. It typically starts with light refreshments of cake and soda, which brings some joy, even though it is not really holy. The chupa, which is holy, follows and adds drama. At the conclusion of the ceremony there is singing which is truly joyous. People then sit down for a meal but only eat the appetizers. This mellows the joy. The newlyweds then enter the hall and very joyous dancing breaks out. People than return to the tables and eat the main course further elevating the celebration. At the meal's conclusion the dancing resumes with the couple, their parents, and rabbis. Guests will perform to entertain the new couple. It is at this peak that euphoria occurs.

There is a similar process of elevation in the Hallel (הלל). Psalm 113, the first, is only recited. Psalm 114, which follows, is often sung. The ideas contained in the Psalms are holy but, the melodies, while pleasing to man, are not. However, they add beauty and depth. Psalm 115 is split. The first half is recited; however drama is added through repetition of grammatical forms and phrases. ". . . eyes that have but see not. Ears they have but hear not", etc. Another is, "Israel trusts in Hashem, their help and their shield he is. The house of Aharon trusts in Hashem, their help and their shield he is". The second half is often sung and is very rhythmic. Rhythm and rhyme are not sacred in and of themselves but never the less are vehicles for sanctity. Psalm 118 which concludes is replete with literary devices. In it the climax is reached with the chanting of the verse, "Please Hashem, deliver please. Please Hashem, success please". So to speak G-d appears to us in the euphoria of this line.

We learn from all of this is that religious rapture is a step by step elevation. Sanctity is mixed with things that are ordinary or perhaps even vulgar, but never the less give joy to man. In the end G-d appears to us in the zenith of our joy.

Chol HaMoed Pesach: Slaughter the Sheep

The first mention of the word Pesach in the Chumash is in Shmos 12:11. In it G-d instructs Moshe to command the children of Israel to take a lamb, slaughter it publicly, and then serve it as a meal on the night that the first born of Egypt are to be killed. The life blood of the lamb is to flow into a bowl. An absorbent cluster of hyssop will then be dipped into the bowl and blood and wiped on the two doorposts and the lintel above. Because of this, the destruction that is coming to Egyptians will pass over, פסח, the houses that have this sign on them. This service is reckoned as a sacrifice and the lamb is called the korbon Pesach (קרבן פסח) or Passover offering. The sacrifice is to be brought annually and eaten with matzo and a bitter vegetable. The Chumash continues that in subsequent years their children will ask the meaning of this ritual. The prescribed answer is that when G-d struck the Egyptians he spared (הציל) the homes of the children of Israel (Shmos 12:27).

These passages raise questions. The use of the word "spare" suggests a special act of clemency in what is really a morally neutral situation. The fact that the Egyptians were cruelly persecuting the people of Israel  seems to mean nothing. The thing that is important to the text is that Israel slaughtered the sheep, placed its blood on the door, and then had a Pesach Seder in their homes. For these reasons they were redeemed.

Meditating on this from the standpoint of nature, persecution and cruelty are not evil. A cat is not bad if it kills a mouse, and a second cat is not bad if it takes the carcass from the cat that killed it. Abuse to enforce the pecking order is legitimate. In a world, in which the strong rule, persecution of the weak is not an evil.

Even from the standpoint of the morality of the soul suffering need not be bad. If the evil are suffering because they are clinging to their evil then the suffering that comes because of it is good. One can argue that if a person puts work into producing an article, it's his. Even a found item should belong to the first person to pick it up. However, these are religious positions and not purely based on nature.

The Ramban (רמב"ן) and the Clee Yakar (כלי יקר) discuss the significance of the choice of a lamb as the sacrifice. They explain that the lamb was the astrological sign for the month of Nissan and the idol of Egypt. From a natural standpoint the entry of the sun into the constellation Aries (the lamb) marks the beginning of spring and the attendant fertility of the land. For this reason these symbols are viewed as possessing supernatural powers, which can be accessed through worship. The public slaughter of the lamb by the children of Israel was intended to denigrate general religious belief in nature and the religion of Egypt in particular.

The essential merit of the children of Israel was the heritage of belief in Hashem from the patriarchs and the anticipation of their acceptance the Torah. The lesson to be learned is that human conduct should be determined by the soul and not so much by the body. This is one of the things we learn from the holiday of Passover and for that reason its first observance made Israel worthy of redemption.

Pesach: Jewish Independence Day

Israel is first called a people in the Chumash when they grow to a size too large to be called an extended family. At that point they spread out and become independent. Pesach, however, is hailed as the day of our freedom because it is the day the children of Israel departed from bondage in Egypt. Likewise many nations celebrate the day that they shook off foreign domination as their national day. There is something in the human personality that associates national freedom from foreign control with national independence. Perhaps the Chumash was the first to note this phenomenon or maybe every national celebration of independance is an extension of Israel's national freedom.

In all cases the principles of national liberation should be repeated in a festive way. Some do it with fireworks and parades. The Jews do it with a Pesach Seder. There, the story of the exodus from Egypt is recounted in accordance to the Biblical mitzvah, "You will tell your child on that day saying, this is for the sake of that which Hashem did for me when I left Egypt," (Shmos 13:8).

The main message is that Israel was redeemed by Hashem in a miraculous way, to be His treasured nation, and to exclusively inhabit the Holy Land. We retell the ancient story through the prism of bringing the first fruits of the new season to the Temple in Jerusalem. In it we acknowledge our humble beginnings, sufferings in exile, and miraculous redemption.

A festive meal is eaten with a special plate set aside with foods that remind us of the holiday's message. There is a roasted shank bone to recall the lamb that we sacrificed in Egypt. In addition there is an egg to recall the tasty holiday offering brought to the Temple. There are bitter vegetables to remind us of the bitterness of slavery, and there is the sweet paste charoses, made to look like mortar, to remind of us of the hard labor of slavery. There is a vegetable to remind us of the fine foods produced by the land of Israel.

We chant poems and songs of praise. Four cups of wine are drunk symbolizing the four fold promise of redemption. A fifth cup is set aside for Elijah the prophet who will tell us if we should drink another in honor of our coming into the Holy Land. We recognize that as long as we are under any sort of foreign domination that our freedom is not complete. Therefore we conclude by saying, "Next year in Jerusalem," in the hope that the meshiach will come and our next Seder will be in the rebuilt Beis HaMikdash.
