Joktan (Yaktan / יָקְטָן)

 

Joktan (Yaktan / יָקְטָן) — Ancestor of thirteen Arabian tribes (Genesis 10:26–29, 1 Chronicles 1:20–23), traditionally associated with Southern Arabia (Yemen) and the region stretching from Mesha toward Sephar, the eastern hill country.

• Almodad (אַלְמוֹדָד): Traditionally located in Southern Arabia or Yemen; speculatively linked to the Al-Mudad tribe or early Himyarite lineages.
• Sheleph (שָׁלֶף): Associated with the Salapeni tribe mentioned by Ptolemy or the district of Sulaf in Yemen.

• Jerah (יֶרַח): Linked to the Arabian coast or the Moon-worshiping tribes around Yemen; speculatively connected to the Mahra region or the city of Jerah on the Red Sea.
• Hadoram (הֲדוֹרָם): Associated with Jurhum / Dhu Rura in Southern Arabia; speculatively linked to the region of Zafar/Dhofar in modern Oman.
• Uzal (אוּזָל): The ancient pre-Islamic name for Sanaa, the modern capital of Yemen.
• Diklah (דִּקְלָה): Traditionally associated with palm-producing regions; speculatively placed in Yemen, the Minæan region, or modern Tigris/Euphrates palm oases.
• Obal (עוֹבָל / Ebal): Located in Yemen; speculatively connected to the 'Ubal region or the Ababil/Abil valley near Sanaa.
• Abimael (אֲבִימָאֵל): Associated with Southern Arabian tribes; speculatively linked to the Mali or Malitae tribe mentioned by classical geographers in western Arabia.
