BeShalach - The Wars of Hashem

In parshas BeShalach the children of Israel leave Egypt and enter the Sinai Desert. It starts with the final attack of the Egyptians and the miraculous parting of the Red Sea and in which Israel passed through and Egypt drowned.  It continues with the sweetening of bitter water, manna raining down from heaven, and water from a rock; also miracles. It concludes with the defeat of Amalek in war by natural means.

The Chumash explains that when Israel left Egypt for the Holy Land, G-d did not let them take the short direct route along the Mediterranean coast. This was the route taken by Avraham to Egypt during the famine in his days and taken by the brothers of Yosef during the famine in their days. Rather the children of Israel traveled hundreds of miles to the south including unnecessarily traversing the Red Sea. The reason given for this unusual path is, if it's possible to say, that G-d was concerned that when Israel saw war they would return to Egypt. The pasuk also mentions that the children of Israel left Egypt armed hinting of wars to come.

The Shem MiShmuel brings a debate in the Mechilta, which is paralled by the Clee Yakar. Rabbi Yehoshua takes the position that Israel needed to experience the parting of the Red Sea so they would have the necessary faith in G-d and in fact believe the prophesy of Moshe rabenu. This was in order for them to accept the Torah on Mount Sinai. Rabbi Eliezer more of less takes the position that the adventures in the desert were needed so that the Jewish people would have confidence in war so they would not flee back to Egypt. The idea is that if they attempted to return to Egypt they would retrace the circuitous path they were currently on. On this the Ramban comments that if the diaspora seems close there is a tendency to return there. In addition the hardships faced by the people purified them. Because of the trials in the desert the nation gained confidence that through adherence to the faith, they would prevail in war. This theme is expressed in Psalm 44:4:

For not by their sword did they inherit the land, neither did their arm save them, but Your right hand and Your arm and the light of Your countenance, for You favored them.

This mirrors the story of the war against Amalek. The Mishna explains that when the hearts of Israel were towards heaven they prevailed but when not, they faltered.

There are hints and explorations of these concepts in the sixth tale in "Praises of the Baal Shem Tov" (שבחי הבש"ט ). In it the Baal Shem Tov falls in with a gang of robbers. They tell him that they can show him the way to the land of Israel. It is a route of caves and underground passages. When the Besht accompanies them he encounters a swinging fiery sword, which causes him to turn back. On the return journey he encounters a giant frog in a desert. The frog explains that he was a religious scholar who disgraced the mitzvah of washing the hands then entirely went off the path. Consequently this was his punishment. When he confessed his sin to the Baal Shem Tov, the scholar was forgiven and he ascended to the world to come.

The first verse of this parsha comes to teach us that the war against Amalek is in every generation and assumes many guises. Sometimes it is with bombs and bullets. Other times the weapon is simply a sympathetic ear. It is not certain which war is the more difficult. There is a tendency when faced with a swinging sword or gross aggravation to flee to a less taxing life in the exile. However if we have witnessed the parting of the Red Sea, heard the voice on Mount Sinai, and have all ready defeated Amalek in one battle, we then have the faith and wisdom to prevail in the wars of Hashem.

Parshas Bo: Recognizing the Powers that Be

In Parshas Bo G-d tells Moshe that He has hardened Pharaoh's heart, therefore he should demand the release of the children of Israel. The object, though, is not to gain their freedom, rather it is to elicit a refusal from Pharaoh and thereby bring another plague on Egypt. The passage continues with G-d's explanation for such unexpected behavior, specifically so that the nation will recount this story to their children and grandchildren. The purpose being so that "all of you will know that I am Hashem your G-d (וידעתם כי אני ה' אלקיכם) (Shmos 10:2).

This phrase is repeated another two times in the Chumash. It is first said when Moshe objects to the harsh treatment by Pharaoh which is a result of the request that that Israel receive time off to celebrate a religious festival (Shmos 6:7). G-d replies that He is liberating them from their suffering with justice and great power. In addition He is making them His nation and making Himself their G-d. At least part of this is so that they will know the "I am Hashem your G-d".

The phrase is also said in connection with G-d giving Israel the manna to eat in the desert (Shmos 16:12) and a number of times in the Prophets. It is used many times in the book of Yechezkel, among them his vision of the valley of the dry bones. Interestingly Yechezkel contains one of the clearest descriptions of G-d on His throne, His entourage, and the mechanism by which he runs the world.

The common thread in all of these is recognition of G-d in this world. So to speak G-d is saying, "Here I am, this is where you can find Me". He is saying it to Moshe. He is saying it to the nation of Israel. He is saying it to the person reading the Tanach. Rabbi Yehuda HaLevi in the Kuzari (part 1 paragraph 77) expresses the idea in very poetic terms. He states that one should not consider it improbable that there are G-dly traces in this lower world. However, one must be primed to accept them. He adds that this is the root of both faith and denial.

So to speak G-d is in constant communication with his creation and particularly with the Jewish people. The problem is that we do not recognize G-d even when he is talking to us. The Tanach is giving us places where He can be seen. Hashem is perceptible in the humiliation and destruction of the wicked as well as the redemption of the righteous. He can be found in the execution of justice and in great might as well as the mundane activity of harvesting our daily bread. Sometimes G-d acts directly other times through agencies like nature or the behavior of living creatures.

Never the less a person must be primed to see the presence of the Powers that Be. The parsha concludes with the mitzvahs of Pesach and tefillin. These provide a hint of the path needed to recognize the Creator. The ideas conveyed are the importance of religious observance including ritual testimonies. One should be humble, wise, and energetic. A person should be mindful of the exodus from Egypt and specifically the sleighing of the first born. In addition the best place to be graced with special perception is the land of Israel.

VaEra - The Stubborn of Sin and Their Destruction

Parshas VaEra continues the story of the exodus of Israel from Egypt. A major theme is just how destructive a single sin can be if it is stubbornly adhered to. The sin which triggers the harsh retributions on Pharaoh and Egypt is their refusal to allow Israel to leave their domain. This causes ten horrible plagues and culminates with the drowning of the Egyptians in the Red Sea.

The sin in fact begins when Pharaoh places a golden necklace around the neck of Yosef. To a certain extent he is telling Yosef that even with all of this luxury; he is chained to Egypt. This becomes clearer with the burial of Ya'akov. Pharaoh allows Yosef to leave temporarily only because of an oath made to his father to bury him in the Holy Land. When Yosef actually travels to the Ma'aras HaMachpela he is accompanied by a large Egyptian force which would make escape very difficult. In addition the possessions and children of the Israelites remain in Egypt to a certain extent as a pledge.

When Israel becomes a large and powerful people, Egypt fears that in the event of a war by making a deal with the enemy they could leave. In the first nine of the ten plagues Pharaoh steadfastly refuses to authorize Israel to travel away from their control. After the death of the first born Egypt consents to their departure but reneges and pursues.

Egypt recognizes the considerable good that Israel has done for them. They are also cognizant that Israel has the right to leave, however they do not respect that right. This is similar to the attitude of Lavan. Ya'akov has made him from a poor man into a rich man. Lavan not only did not want Ya'akov to leave but wanted to keep all of the profits for himself and treat Ya'akov as if he was a small child helping around the store. A rectification for this sin was made in the Mishna by Rabbi Elazar ben Azarya when his wife asked him if he could accept the fact that his appointment to be head of the Sanhedrin would only be temporary. He replied he could as it would be an honor to have held the post even for a short time.

The stubbornness of Egypt's determination to hold onto Israel, though, seems only to be a vehicle for how destructive a relatively small sin can be if it is clung to. The desire to retain a productive employee, who has his sights on better opportunities, is not so terrible. However, the obstinacy causes much more serious sins and with serious consequences. In Egypt it starts with persecution which becomes paranoid and murderous.

By the time Moshe approaches him, the sin is ruling over Pharaoh, his advisors, and the Egyptian people. When Moshe turns his staff into a snake which eats the staffs turned to snakes of Pharaoh's advisors, they really should know that they can not win. With the third plague (lice) Pharaoh's advisors verbally acknowledge that it is the finger of G-d. The threat to bring a plague of locusts (the eighth) is taken seriously, but it does not change the situation. The obstinacy in clinging to a small sin causes big sins and other sins that were present to surface. Pharaoh begins a tyrant and his people become murders. When the sin rules over them it twist there brains making them vain apostates playing stupid games. In the end it causes their destruction.

All people and all nations have their failings and shortcomings. The question is at what point they are corrected. At times a religious precept will strike a responsive chord and a person will proceed to follow it. This would be reckoned as an act of faith. Other times a person is taught by the behavior of his environment. Still other times a person will be guided by his internal sense of right and wrong. If this is the product of things like observation and meditation it would be a product of the intellect. Certain types of behavior arouse love or hatred or can be beautiful or ugly. Learning from this is a product of the emotions. At times behavior elicits a physical reaction, good or bad. This is in the realm of action.

In all four situations there are degrees of clarity. At times a person is dealing with abstruse hints other times message is apparent. A religious precept can be very clear. Other things can be very logical or very stupid. An emotional response can be very strong. Something can be physically beneficial or harmful. As clarity increases the case for a particular behavior becomes more compelling. At some point refusal to submit becomes a sin and a psychological complex tends to develop.

There is a social dimension as well. Typically one must violate popular morality to do something wrong. However there are times when society is wrong and a person must separate himself to do the right thing. When a person acts on knowledge of a new fact or an understanding of the implications of existing information, he is reckoned as a חכם (wise man). If he adheres to dogma he is reckoned as principled. If he pays a price for doing the right thing he is reckoned as a צדיק (tsadik).
