Rosh Hashana - Remembers the Brit

Part of the observance of the high holidays is the recitation of “Slichos” (סליחות). The word literally means pardons and it is basically a collection of liturgical poetry with themes relevant to the Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. One of the poems, במוצאי מנוחה, asks the Holy One, blessed be He, to tend to the people who tend to Him and seek His face, and He should listen to their cry and their prayer.

This differs from the typical theme of the days of awe, which is confessions of guilt and requests for mercy. The idea here is the suffering of the righteous. This is the type of person whose sins are few and small, but nevertheless less endures great travails. Even though some of the travails are atonements and purifications, most all of them are the suffering of a holy warrior who is championing difficult issues in a world which often is ignorant and malevolent.

Says the Talmud, “on Rosh HaShana Sarah, Rachel, and Hannah were tended to by God and conceived; on Rosh HaShana Joseph came out from prison”,(Rosh Hashana 10b). Concerning this Rashi explains “tended to (נפקדה) Sarah”, as, “came the memory (זכרונם) of them for good and conception was decreed upon them”. Similarly one of the descriptions in the Chumash for Rosh Hashana is the day of remembrance and this is its typical name (יום הזכרון) in the liturgy. Likewise a section of its additional service is called zichronos (remembrances - זכרונות). It mentions God remembering things for the good during difficult times like Noah during the flood, the groaning of Israel during bondage in Egypt, and their following after Hashem in a barren wilderness.

To be exact the idea of remembrance on Rosh Hashana is a reckoning of past good and bad followed by a decision as to what the next year will be like, for example to quote the poem U’nasana Tokef (ונתנה תוקף): Who will rest and who will wander; who will have quiet and who will be disturbed; who will be serene and who will suffer; who will rise and who will fall; who will become rich and who will become poor.

It is possible for a good person to believe that this world is nothing but toil and punishment. There is no joy, rather as soon as one evil is defeated another battle arises. That is not true. It may be a long and rocky to heaven but there are roses along the way. Therefore it is appropriate to yearn to finish this year and its curses and hope for the new year and its blessings.

Proverbs 3:5-10 - Misuse of Logic

The second paragraph (פְּתוּחָה) in the third chapter of Proverbs urges a person not to rely on their own understanding. This is unexpected considering that the book of Proverbs emphasizes development of the intellect especially the characteristic of understanding. Adding to this difficulty, shortly thereafter after it says one should not be a wiseman in his own eyes.

The concern is that the intellect can be exploited to justify anything that is considered pleasing. The mind can always be used to provide some sort of a rationale. People will say things like you never really know, black is white, or it's all nonsense; often at great length while speaking rapidly. Therefore all their actions are entirely proper, even ones that are bad; maybe obviously, maybe subtly.

The warnings against misuse of knowledge and logic are paired with exhortations to trust in God with a whole heart and abandon evil. Although it is not said explicitly, the Torah and its precepts are considered the definition of good. Therefore trusting in Hashem is reckoned as keeping the Torah and believing that good things will happen because of it. This section of Proverbs gives the example that it will heal your flesh and quench the thirst of your bones. The implication is that the Torah provides nourishment and cures a person's ills.

The section ends by saying, “Honor Hashem with your wealth and the best that you can produce”, (Proverbs 3:9). The simple understanding is to be charitable. It also suggests that the best that a Jew can produce should be proudly given to religion. The question is what does this have to do with don't be too smart for your own good? The answer is that when it comes to charity, this is where people come up with all sorts of clever excuses. It's even more extreme if the idea is that a contribution, even a generous one is not enough. Rather religion gets the best of everything.

It is here that one needs to contemplate the words of King Solomon. Is he saying that a Jew should be dedicating his life to Judaism and not try to get out of it by making excuses. Or is he saying if you want to get a good look at excuses, stories, and sophistry, pay attention to how people behave when asked to give charity. It's probably a bit of both.

Proverbs 2 - Like a Hidden Treasure

The second chapter of Proverbs continues its exhortation to pursue wisdom. It states that one should search for knowledge as if it is money and a hidden treasure. This will bring a person to understand fear of Hashem and to know the Powers that Be.

The intellect is seen as a vehicle. The secondary objective is to understand why there should be concern about Biblical laws and values. The basic idea is that their violation or abandonment is likely to result in genuine suffering. The primary objective of development of the mind is to know the Holy One blessed be He. If it is possible to say, Hashem wants friends that know Him well. The greater the acquisition of  knowledge in general, the greater is the acquisition of knowledge of Hashem in particular.

The paradigm seems to be that God bestows wisdom on good people, and wisdom also makes good people better. For example they will relate to all aspects of good, such as honesty, integrity, fairness, and loyalty. One of the points of the first chapter of Mishle is that knowledge inclines a person to good and that evil is often a motivation for ignorance. There is an emotional and esthetic dimension as well. As knowledge is gained and appreciated one finds it increasingly sweet and beautiful.

The chapter then segues into a discussion of evil. It states that if wisdom is in the heart, it will rescue one from the allure of evil and its pleasures. Its paths are dark ways of rebelliousness, perversion, and being underhanded. Evil itself is likened to a alien and strange woman. Its modus operandi is to abandon a person's natural childhood faith than forget religion altogether. It inclines a person to death meaning that its thoughts, deeds, and actions impair physical and mental health, cause premature aging, and early death.

Escape from evil can be very difficult. This is because its pleasures are real even though they are detrimental. Plus one acquires bad habits and attitudes. In addition it may cause a person to live in a bad area and have a bad job. All of these may be impossible to change. On top of that acquisition of good qualities may take substantial time and effort, which may not be later available. In the end the straight and honest will dwell in the land, and wicked and treacherous will be cut off and rooted out of the world.
