Balak בלק – The Struggle Between the Pure and the Defiled

Parshas Balak examines the hatred of the defiled טמא for the pure טהור. In it the nation of Israel has conquered the lands of Amorite kings, Sichon and Og, placing them on the border of Moab. Moav reacts with fear and disgust. Rashi explains that they felt pressured because of Israel’s victory was over two powerful allies that they relied upon. Moshe Rabenu in his final discourses castigates Moav because they did not greet Israel with bread and water when they left Egypt. The implication is that the strong friend of Moav should have been Israel. Later on Moav sends their women to seduce the Israelite men in an attempt to cause their downfall through moral corruption. It’s a bold move that would not be expected from a fearful adversary.

Moav’s concern is not that Israel is simply too powerful rather that they are a powerful enemy and not a powerful friend. The reason that Moav views Israel as an enemy is because they view Israel with disgust. The word used here for disgust (ויקץ) is the same word used by the Egyptians in regards to the children of Israel (ויקצו), when they enslaved them. This word is grammatically similar to the word for thorn and Rashi brings here the rabbinic discourse that they were like thorns in their eyes (see Exodus 1:12), so to speak eyesores.

Using the same word Rivka, our matriarch, says that she is disgusted with life because of Esau’s two Canaanite wives (see 27:46). Here it has connotations of defilement based on sexual misconduct and idolatry. The commentaries understand the Chumash as saying that all three of them were not strangers to adultery. In addition one of the reasons given for the blindness of Yitzchak avinu is the burning of incense to idolatry to idolatry by Esav’s wives. Similarly the prohibition against passing an infant through fire for the sake of the idol Molech is listed with the forbidden sexual relationships. What we see is that the טומא of physical lust goes hand in hand with the impurity of idolatry.

Just like purity loathes defilement so too defilement loathes purity. Egypt is described as being steeped in licentiousness and idolatry while Israel is described as pure and faithful. For this reason Egypt is disgusted with Israel. The Or HaChaim sermonizes that during the revelation on Mount Sinai that the Ten Commandments were offered to many nations. When it was offered to Ammon and Moav they rejected it because of the prohibition against adultery, saying that for them obscenity was a way of life. In Bilam’s blessings he praises the physical relationships and the home life of the children of Israel. He also says that he sees no divination or charms in Israel. For these reasons Moav loathes Israel.

Part of the struggle between purity and defilement is in the realm of self-perception. In parshas Shlach the spies in the face of the impurity of the Canaanites consider themselves to be grasshoppers basically because of their own purity and faith. The Kli Yakar brings a parallel saying that Moab viewed themselves as thorns in comparison to the children of Israel; again playing with the word ויקץ. He then analyzes Psalm 80:9-10. “A vine from Egypt You fetched, you expelled nations and planted it. You cleared a place before it and rooted its roots and it filled the earth”. He observes that it is the way of the world that when the owner of a field wants to plant a vineyard in field filled with thorns then he uproots the thorns by the root and throws them away in order to plant in their place a grapes.

When Moav and Midian fail at cursing Israel they then embark on an attempt to corrupt them. The plan is first to seduce physically them then to seduce them to idolatry. The idolatry of Moav was called the Baal Peor, literally the master of defecation. Its service was to defecate before it or on it. The intension is to declare absolute hatred of religion. The Chumash writes, “the people began to prostitute themselves with the daughters of Moav. They then invited the people to sacrificial dinners of their gods and the people ate and bowed down to their gods,” (Numbers 25:1-2). The Or HaChaim notes here that the word began, ויחל, is the language of profanation חילול. The Rabenu Bechai comments that they made their sanctity profane. An act of fanaticism by Pinchas the Cohen ends this episode, but not before a plague from heaven claims 24,000 of Israel.

The nature of the world is that it is filled with darkness with a ray of light that expands and grows stronger. The darkness is tumah (טומא) and the pure ray of light is Israel. The struggle between the pure and the defiled will continue until the Messianic era. As it says, “It will be that day declares the Lord of Hosts that I will cut off the name of the miserables [idols] from the world and their names will no longer be mentioned nor their prophets, and the spirit of defilement I will cause to pass from the world,” (Zechariah 13:2).

Chukas חקת – Descent for the Ascent

In parshas Chukas the Chumash gives the laws concerning purification from defilement caused by contact with a dead body. Specifically a cow whose fur is entirely red is burnt as a sacrifice. Cedar wood, a hyssop plant, and red yarn are thrown into the fire. The ashes are then combined with water. A person, who has touched a corpse or has been in a room with a corpse, or even a cemetery, will be considered tumay טמא. Consequently it is forbidden for him to eat consecrated food or visit the Temple grounds. Purification takes a week during which the ashes of the red heifer are sprinkled on him on the third and seventh day.

The mitzvah is called a חק (chok) because many aspects of it are not logical. The word chok is similar to the word engraved, meaning that because it is engraved in stone one follows it the way it is written. Rashi explains it is called a chok “Because Satan and the nations of the world taunt Israel, saying, “What is this commandment, and what purpose does it have?” Therefore, the Torah uses the term “law”. I have decreed it; you have no right to challenge it”, (Yoma 67b).

The concept of defilement due to death has difficulties. It may cause a person to be perceived as dirty by G-d, themselves, or others, however they are not physically dirty. In addition why does this elaborate ritual remove the stain of death? Adding to the complications a person who is pure טהור who comes into contact with ashes of the red heifer becomes טמא. In addition cohanim, who are specifically warned against becoming ritually impure, are the only ones that can produce the ashes of the red heifer, but do become tumay in the process. The Chumash also says that those who sprinkle the ashes on the defiled must launder their clothes. Rashi comments though that they still are in fact pure.

The concept of defilement and purification from death remains today. The Shulchan Aruch cites a halacha that after one who has been in a cemetery, he must wash his hands in a prescribed fashion (Orach Chaim 4:18). The commentaries explain that it is because evil spirits (Mishna Brura 42) or demons (Magan Avraham 20) accompany him.

The Gemara (see Yoma 14a) is puzzled by the fact that the ashes of the red cow make one who is pure impure. It reasons that if these ashes make one who is impure pure, it should make one who is already pure even more pure. Based on this Rabbi Akiba says it is like King Solomon who said, “I will become wise but it was far from me”, (Ecclesiastics 7:23).

The Sforno notes these Gemaras and apologetically suggests that we have something to understand in every mitzvah and maybe we can steal a shred from this one as well. He remarks in addition to the difficulties already mentioned the color red is generally associated with sin; therefore it’s unusual that it should be associated here with repentance. In addition the ashes contain cedar, a symbol of pride, and hyssop, a symbol of humility. He comments that in addition to contradicting each other they are both considered as sinful in regards to this mitzvah. Concerning humility the Sforno brings the Gemara that King Saul was punished because he was not properly strict about the honor of his throne.

He explains that the mitzvah of the parah aduma hints that in repairing one’s ways it may be appropriate to do some very negative things. For example to uproot a bad quality it may be necessary to go to the opposite extreme. Also a cure may involve doing something disgusting like inducing diarrhea.

These principles are applied in the Rabbi Nachman story, “The Man who became a Turkey”. In it a prince goes crazy and imagines that he is a turkey. He then sat naked under the table and would only eat scraps of food. To cure him a wise man did the same thing. The wise man commented to the prince that he also was a turkey. Once the wise man gained the confidence of the prince he gradually dressed, sat nicely at the table, and ate properly, explaining that turkeys can do these things, too. The prince accepted the wise man’s point of view and emulated him, until little by little, he completely acted like a normal man.

We see from this that there are times when good people must do unusual things to help others. This is one way we understand the verse, “A time to do for Hashem, void your Torah”, (Psalm 119:126). Rashi explains there may be times when a good person must transgress the words of the Torah in order to help Israel. The more fundamental idea is that there is a transcendent G-d who has a transcendent good that even transcends the Torah and certainly transcends man’s small ability to understand.

Korach קרח – How to Make a Machlokes

Parshas Korach is a case study on machlokes. To understand it satire is an effective vehicle. To begin with machlokes often starts with an ambitious unqualified person who tries to steal a position from its rightful holder. Korach was not qualified to be the leader of the nation of Israel or the Cohen Gadol. He was simply jealous of Moshe and Aharon and piqued at being passed over for a position that he felt should have been gone to him (see Rashi on Numbers 16:1).

The first allies of the baal machlokes are malcontents and troublemakers. In this case Korach’s first followers were Datan and Aviram, who were always looking for an opportunity to attack Moshe. After that one needs a large crowd of loud followers. It helps if they are influential. This is the 250 people who quickly join Korach. They are also ambitious but unqualified. Their rationale for joining is something like this. The proper leader like, Moshe, will be difficult to depose because he is the proper leader. However if he is deposed the position is up for grabs. True any of them may be less qualified than Korach, however because he is also not qualified, the position may fall to them either now or sometime later. As long as Korach is taking the risks, it’s worth it.

After that one needs a halachic issue. It is important for the dissenters to be materially wrong. If they are right or it’s not important, the proper leader can concede the issue. The dissenters will have something to crow about but the rebellion will lose much of its fire. As a result it must be something with which a conscientious leader would differ.

The issue of the blue dye in Rashi is illustrative. In it Korach dresses his band in blue cloaks and asks Moshe if they require that strings be attached to the corners. Moshe replies that a tallis requires tsitsis. With that they laugh at him and retort. If a blue thread fulfills the obligation to wear tsitsis, then certainly a blue garment containing many blue threads fulfills this mitzvah (see Rashi on Bamidbar 16:1).

It is important to ignore the fact that the strings are meant to be a noticeable reminder and without them there is no reminder regardless of the color of the garment. However the spurious connection between the blue string in tsitsis and the blue threads in the cloak will give them ample opportunity for sophistry and mischief. It is also best to laugh at a proper explanation because an appeal to reason will certainly lose. In addition others may find the joke funny, too.

Duplicity is also very useful. For example Korach complains that Moshe has exceeded his authority. In it he implies that a strong leader is not necessary and that duties of the high priest should be distributed among all of the Levi’im. Gullible dreamers will be pleased with this idyllic proposal. However for Korach it’s all just a subterfuge for him to take over these positions himself.

The claim also has the additional benefit of being personally embarrassing for Moshe to reply to it. The reason is because Moshe did not want to be leader but was drafted into it by the Holy One, blessed be He. As a result he is forced to justify an assignment he was compelled to accept by a higher authority.

The rhetoric should be inflammatory and mocking. Instead of accusing the other of being surreptitious and deceptive say that he’s attempting to gouge out the eyes of the masses. If the target’s objective was to lead the people to a better land which he describes as flowing with milk and honey, then accuse him of leaving a land flowing with milk and honey in order to kill everybody in the desert.

In the end the Gemara reports that things went badly for Korach and his gang. Raba expounded what is meant by the verse, “But if the Lord creates a creation, and the earth opens its mouth [and swallows them and all that is theirs, and they descend alive into the grave, you will know that these men have provoked the Lord]", (Numbers 26:30). Moses said to the Holy One, blessed be He, ‘If the Gehenna has already been created, fine; if not, let the Lord create it now.’ . . . A Tanna taught: It has been said on the authority of Moses our Master, a place was set apart for them in the Gehenna, where they sat and sang praises [to God]. Rabbah b. Bar Hana said, I was proceeding on my travels, when a caravan driver said to me, come, and I will show you where the men of Korah were swallowed up. I went and saw two cracks from where smoke was coming up. He then clipped a piece of wool, soaked it in water, attached it to the point of his spear, and passed it over the place and it became singed. I said to him, listen to what you are about to hear. I then heard them saying, Moshe and his Torah are true, but they [Korah's company] are frauds. The caravan driver then said to me, every thirty days Gehenna causes them to return here like meat in a pot, and they say, Moshe and his Torah are true, but they are frauds (Sanhedrin 110a,b)."

Shlach שלח – Risks and Dangers

The story of the spies in parshas Shlach is a case study in cowardice. To get a fuller picture of what happened it helps to read the review of the incident in Deuteronomy 1:20-46. When the nation approaches the land of Canaan, Moshe Rabenu tells them, "You have come to the mountain of the Amorites, which the Lord, our God, is giving us. Behold, the Lord, your God, has set the land before you; go up and possess it, as the Lord, God of your fathers has spoken to you; you shall neither fear nor be dismayed. And all of you approached me and said, ‘Let us send men ahead of us so that they will search out the land for us and bring us back word by which route we shall go up, and to which cities we shall come,’" (ibid 20-22).

The Holy One, blessed be he answers, “Send for yourself men to tour (ויתרו) the land” (Numbers 13:2). The word tour refers to both military reconnaissance as well as evaluating the merits of the land. The tone of the Chumash is that neither was really necessary as Canaan was a known quantity because of the tradition from the patriarchs as well as being a neighboring country of Egypt. Moshe had a detailed knowledge of the land, as shown in his final discourses (see parshas Ekev), and the nation had heard the prophesy from Hashem. The report of an exploratory committee would seem to add very little.

Rashi comments that Moshe consulted the Holy One blessed be He, who replied that He had promised them a good land when He took them out of Egypt. Because of this He would cause the spies to err. The Sifsei Chachamim brings the Gemara that one who wishes to become impure an opportunity is given to him (Shabbos 104a).

The instructions to the spies have both military and quality of life aspects. If the cities are fortified tends to be military. Samples of the fruit of the land would be domestic. Healthy people and fertile land can be either. The Chumash seems to be hinting that an ambiguous request was made in order to conceal motives that were not good.

In the end the spies reject the Holy Land because they reckon the enemy as being too powerful. They describe the Canaanites as titans and giants and see themselves as grasshoppers. G-d’s promise of victory is of no relevance to them.

Calev and Yehoshua dissent saying, “"We can surely go up and take possession of it, for we are well able to prevail,". The other ten spies then retort, “We are unable to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we,” (ibid 30-31). Rashi notes that the expression “than we” ממנו is the same as “than he” and comments that it was as if they were referring to the lack of strength from Above. Caleb and Yehoshua reply that they certainly should not rebel against Hashem and they should not fear these people because their protection is gone and G-d is with us” (see Number 14:9-10).

In evaluating the chances of success in battle there are a number of factors such as manpower, weaponry, and morale. In the final analysis, though, it seems that victory comes to the side whose cause was just, because G-d was on their side. This is what was seen by Moshe, Yehoshua, and Calev, and is what should be seen by all Yisrael.

The spies on the other hand despised the power of religion and were embarrassed by their attachment to it. As a result they were prone to make errors. The story also seems to indicate that in addition to obfuscation, they were also manipulative and wild.

G-d condemns the nation to forty years in the desert. In response the people make a phony charade of trying to conquer Canaan. The idea is to make a valiant but failing effort. It does fail and was also unwelcome.

The message of the parsha seems to be that courage is not only important to capturing the land of Israel but in learning Torah as well. At times the demands of wisdom and the demands of observance are very formidable. In addition there are dangers and risks. Typically, though, they are only in the realm of disappointment and embarrassment. However there are also indications that G-d is with you and that success will come. A coward will run away and come up with all sorts of stupid tricks that only make his failure inevitable.
