Ki Thisa \ Psalm 125 - Trust in G-d

Ki Thisa \ Psalm 125

Trust in G-d

1. A song of ascents. Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which will not falter but will abide forever.
2. Jerusalem has mountains around it, and the Lord is around His people from now and to eternity.
3. For the rod of wickedness will not rest on the lot of the righteous, in order that the righteous do not stretch out their hands into wrongdoing.
4. Be good, O Lord, to the good and to the upright in their hearts.
5. And those who turn their crooked ways-may the Lord lead them away with the workers of iniquity, [and may there be] peace on Israel.

The subject of Psalm 125 is trust in G-d (ביטחון בה'). This is different than faith in G-d. With trust in G-d the concept of reward and punishment for keeping the Torah has been seen enough through the eye of flesh and blood. Extrapolation, which is the medium for faith, therefore is not used.

This idea is expressed in the third verse namely that the dominion of evil will not rule over the righteous so that the righteous will not start doing bad things. One can ask how could a person do bad things and still be considered a tsadik. The answer is that if the environment is sufficiently corrupt than corrupt things become acceptable. This is illustrated by the following story.

England ruled the Holy Land at the time that large numbers of Jews were moving there. They were basically benevolent and in an attempt to keep peace with the Arabs they forbid Jews to immigrate to the land of Israel. One day the British caught two Jewish families from Syria trying to enter Israel illegally. If they were sent back the Syrians would certainly execute them as traitors. This bothered the British High Commissioner very much, therefore he requested an audience with a great sage from among the Jews, the saintly rabbi of Jerusalem Yosef Tsvi Dushinsky. He explained, “As you know there is a law forbidding Jewish immigration into the land. Should I permit someone to transgress this law? How would you deal with transgressor of Jewish law?”

The rabbi started by quoting our psalm, “The rod of wickedness will not rest on the lot of the righteous, in order that the righteous do not stretch out their hands into wrongdoing.” He continued, “What causes the righteous to stretch out their hands into iniquity, which obviously implies transgressing the law? Isn’t it the rod of wickedness, in other words, the laws fabricated by the wicked which are untenable to the righteous. He concluded, “We pray that the law against Jewish immigration will be repealed so that more Jews will not be arrested for breaking the law”. The commissioner was moved and accepted the two families into the country.

Hundreds of years earlier the Talmud (Buba Kama 113a) dealt with the same issue. “Is it not a definite transgression to evade the customs tax? Didn’t Shmuel state that the law of the kingdom is law? Rabbi Hanina ben Kahana said that Samuel stated that a customs-collector who is bound by no limit [is surely not acting lawfully]. At the School of Rabbi Jannai it was stated that we were dealing here with a customs collector who acted on his own authority.” In other words no obligation exists to respect a law giving a thief a license to steal. Similarly Rabbi Nachman of Breslav states, “It is acceptable for a tsadik to be very deceitful with a crook”.

This is the problem. If it is common for a very long time and the crooks by any reckoning do well, then it really seems as if it’s proper to lie, cheat, and steal when it suits you and the people who don’t do it are fools. As for the Torah prohibitions against such behavior, it’s a cute heartwarming idea, but in the real world you do what you have to do.

The psalm comes to tell us that such a thing will not happen. Rather people who have trust in G-d will be like Mount Zion. Just like the Temple Mount and the Torah it represents do not change the righteous will not change. Just like mountains surround Mount Zion to defend it, the Holy One Blessed be He will surround the straight of heart to defend them. For a while the malevolent will do well. After that their brains and lives will become as twisted as their actions. As for those who trusted in the Torah, who are called by the psalm Israel, and they will see peace.

Tetsaveh \ Psalm 130 - Waiting for the New Day

Tetsaveh \ Psalm 130

Waiting for the New Day

1. A song of ascents. From the depths I have called You, O Lord.
2. O Lord, hearken to my voice; may Your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications.
3. O God, if You keep [a record of] iniquities, O Lord, who will stand?
4. For forgiveness is with You, in order that You be feared.
5. I hoped, O Lord; yea, my soul hoped, and I wait for His word.
6. My soul is to the Lord among those who await the morning, those who await the morning.
7. Israel, hope to the Lord, for kindness is with the Lord and much redemption is with Him.
8. And He will redeem Israel from all their iniquities.

Samson Raphael Hirsch describes Psalm 130 as a study, “of the ways in which the Jewish spirit can rise up even from the depth of that deepest misery of all, misfortune coupled with the burden of guilt”. The Sforno comments on calling out, “from the depths”, as the depths of the exile. It would seem that the psalm is the prayer of one who has intentionally driven religion out of his life through his own violations. As a result of intense troubles, the person now is looking towards heaven for help and wishes to return to the faith. It could be physical exile from the Holy Land as well as great personal alienation.

The song asks G-d rhetorically, if you held onto sins who could endure. This is building up to the idea that the petitioner is looking for a new day. The sinner uses the fact that everybody commits sins from time to time in order to face up to his own shortcomings and allow him to fulfill his desire to change.

A number of high ideas are contained in the verse, “For with You is the pardon in order that You should be feared”. The first is that one must initially come to grips with Hashem, not something else, in order to receive forgiveness. This is similar to the idea of the high holidays where on Rosh Hashana one recognizes Hashem as the creator and king. After that on Yom Kippur one can approach him for forgiveness. The next idea is that of forgiveness as a vehicle for fear of Hashem. The Sforno sees this explained by the verses, “I have cut off nations . . . I said in deed they will fear me and accept rebuke”, (Tsefaniah 3:6-7), and, “Israel saw the great hand that Hashem did in Egypt and the people feared Hashem”, (Exodus 14:31). This is an aspect of higher fear where the fear is not based on an expected punishment rather the fear is based on greatness and majesty. The idea is that seeing great wisdom and righteousness in another can be intimidating. The vehicle for recognition of these high qualities can be mercy and forgiveness.

Many of the commentaries understand yearning for the word of Hashem as yearning for the fulfillment of the promised redemption. However, it can also mean general insight and inspiration from heaven, which will give the person the means to solve or cope with difficult problems. The psalm continues, “My soul waits for my lord more so than a watchman waits for the morning, a watchman waits for the morning”. Rashi comments that this is yearning for the redemption which is repeated after every conclusion. The Sforno says that one is fitting to be saved and to have vengeance exacted from those persecuting him, because he hoped to Hashem and yearned for the redemption. The components of repentance here are hoping to be forgiven, yearning for knowledge of religion, and desiring a world governed by Torah principles.

The psalm concludes that Hashem will redeem Israel from all of its iniquities. The Malbim comments, “This will be through removing the darkness of night, in anticipation of the morning, and redeeming them at dawn”. Darkness and night are expressions of ignorance and sin. Morning is an expression of a new era of wisdom and righteousness. The Sforno comments, “All of the iniquities are from the power of the exile, but they will not continue to cause them to stumble when He will go out in their midst”.  The clearest understanding, “Hashem will redeem Israel from its iniquities”, is that He will help Israel to repent. This is like the story in the Talmud (Shabbos 104a) about the Hebrew letter kuf, which is part of anecdote about the letters of the Hebrew alphabet:

Kuf [stands for] Kadosh [holy]; Resh [for] Rasha [wicked]: why is the face of the Kuf averted from, the Resh? The Holy One, blessed be He, said “I cannot stand to look at the wicked”. Why is the crown of the Kuf turned towards the Resh? The Holy One, blessed be He, says “If he repents, I will bind a crown on him like Mine”. Why is the foot of the Kuf separate?  [To show] that if he repents, he can enter and be brought in [to God's favour] through this [opening]. This supports Resh Lakish, for Resh Lakish said: What is meant by, “Surely he scorns the scorners, but he gives grace to the lowly”, (Proverbs 3:34)? If one comes to defile himself, he is given an opening, if one comes to cleanse himself, he is helped.

Teruma \ Psalm 128 - Blessings from the Fear of Heaven

1. A song of ascents. Happy are all who fear the Lord, who walk in His ways.
2. For the toil of your hands you will eat, it makes you happy, and it is good for you.
3. Your wife will be as a fruitful vine in the recesses of your house; your sons like olive saplings around your table.
4. Behold that so will a man who fears the Lord be blessed.
5. May the Lord bless you from Zion, and see the good of Jerusalem all the days of your life.
6. And may you see children [born] to your children, [and see] peace upon Israel.

Psalm 128 is basically a praise of those that fear Hashem and walk in his ways. Rashi comments that it is all encouragement and inspiration. The Metsudas David relates “going in His ways” to fulfilling the positive commandments and “fearing Hashem” to not transgressing the negative commandments. He adds that the propriety of his actions will bring him many successes .The Meiri describes fear of Hashem as including avoiding all sin and disdaining all that is deplorable. The Sforno explains, “Happy are those that fear Hashem”, as knowledge of His greatness in depth. Samson Raphael Hirsch remarks that, “The fear of the Lord and honest conduct in His ways are in themselves sufficient to secure happiness”.

Maimonides in the Sefer Hamitzvos basically defines fear of Hashem saying “We are commanded to establish in our minds fear and dread of Gd (exalted be He); we should not be calm and nonchalant, but be constantly concerned of imminent punishment [for misdeeds.]”. Concerning going in the ways of Hashem, the Rambam learns that it is a mitzvah emulate the Holy One blessed be He. Paraphrasing the Sifri, he explains that just as Hashem is called merciful, gracious, righteous, and kind; so too we should be merciful, gracious, righteous, and kind. Maimonides adds that we should strive to acquire the noble appellations by which G-d is described.

Chaim Vital’s discussion in Shaarei Kedusha (part 1 gate 2) of how good character makes a person apt to perform the mitzvahs, gives some insights on the ways of Hashem. In it he says that the four foundations of nature, fire, wind, water, and earth correspond to the four letters of the ineffable name. From these foundations come four basic bad character traits; vanity, blather, hedonism, and depression. The opposite of the bad are four good traits; humility, proper use of speech, disdain for extravagance, and joy.
The book then goes into detail how to inculcate these ideas into a person’s mentality and behavior.

The Malbim associates fear of heaven with three endeavors; self-perfection, perfection of the home, and perfection of the nation. As opposed to material successes, he sees going in the paths of Hashem as the essential happiness of the soul. These would correspond to the three blessings in the psalm. The first is a livelihood which brings satisfaction. The second is a nice wife and children. The third is the peace of Mount Zion, Jerusalem, and Israel.

Concerning “going in His paths”, the Meiri says includes hints of perfection and among them, one should not jump for money, rather he should eat from the labor of his hands and that appropriate actions will incline one to many successes. The Yalkut Shimoni brings a homily from Mar Zutra in the name of Rabbi Hisda that every talmid chacham who reads, reviews, and serves other religious scholars will see sustenance for himself. About him it is written, “the labor of your hands you will eat and you will be happy and it will be good for you”. The Sforno simply states, “your needs will be satisfied.”

On the verse, “Your wife is a fruitful vine”, Rashi comments, “many children”. The Meiri comments, “a dignified wife”. The Metsudas Zion explains, “It’s a concept of back and side”. “It is the type of thigh that is on the side of a man as is the ‘thigh’ of the altar”. The Malbim comments, “Even though she is in the recesses (בירכתי – thighs) of the house, she raises her branches and droops them on the roof of the house and generally shelters the house from there. Likewise, she modestly dwells in the tent in the recesses of the home; and in all of this she protects and shelters all aspects of the home”. The language is similar to the Song of Songs (7:2), “How beautiful are your feet in shoes, daughter of nobility, the curves of your thighs (חמוקי ירכיך) are like jewels the work of a craftsman”, suggesting sensuality and beauty.

The Metsudas David comments, “She will be like a vine, which grows plants that stand inside the home close to you, to provide help and nourishment in a time, when fruits are many and good. In a similar fashion your wife will bear many good children. ‘Like olive saplings’ they remain beautiful all the days of the year, so to your children, their faces never fade and they will surround your table and not rely on the table of others.” The Meiri comments about the virtues of the sons saying, “they are to be compared to olive trees . . . because the olive leaves last all year, summer and winter, and likewise they [the sons] are busy all the days of their childhood with Torah and wisdom. Every sapling gives its fruit in its time and its leaves do not wilt”.

The last two lines of the psalm is King David’s blessing to the person with fear of heaven. It is that G-d should bless him out of Zion, meaning the Holy Temple; he should see the good of Jerusalem, his grandchildren, and peace in Israel. The Malbim understands a blessing from Zion as a blessing from a sacred place. He sees the good of Jerusalem as the success of the community and of being part of its good and joy. The Metsudas David understands the blessing as seeing the good of Jerusalem at the time when it will be rebuilt. The Yalkut Shemoni sees the blessing from Zion as all of its affairs, tranquility, and goodness.

The Metsudas David comments on “peace” that you will see peace in Israel when they dwell in their own land. The Sforno comments that you will be among those selected for the days of the messiah. On, “seeing your children’s children”, he remarks that they will raise up many students. And, “peace on Israel”, means that there will not be the many divisions like it was in the early days.

Mishpatim \ Psalm 127 - Heart to Heart

1. A song of ascents about Solomon. If the Lord will not build a house, its builders have toiled at it in vain; if the Lord will not guard a city, [its] watcher keeps his vigil in vain.
2. It is futile for you who arise early, who sit late, who eat the bread of toil, to his beloved he will give tranquility.
3. Behold, the heritage of the Lord is sons, the reward is the fruit of the innards.
4. Like arrows in the hand of a mighty man, so are the sons of one's youth.
5. Praiseworthy is the man who has filled his quiver with them; they will not be ashamed when they talk to the enemies in the gate.

King David’s life was one of dedication and love of Hashem. He also loved his wife Bathsheba and his son Solomon very dearly. In addition he took great pride that he would father the line of the kings of Israel. Solomon, his son, was overflowing with gifts and faith. Like a good father David recognized early where his son’s imperfections lied, and tried to nip them in the bud. Solomon was only twelve years old when he became king, so this psalm was written when he was still a boy. Psalm 127 is basically a heart to heart talk King David was giving to his son Solomon, the crown prince, interweaving the topics of women, religion, and progeny. Because of his son’s youth and the nature of his concerns, it was necessary to be oblique.

Rashi comments: “David saw through divine inspiration that in the future Shlomo would build the temple and on that day he would marry the daughter of Pharaoh. Concerning this it is written, “For this city has aroused My anger and My wrath from the day they built it until today. Therefore the song is asking, ‘What are you gaining my son to wander from the Omnipresent after that which He does not desire and for nothing is your labor in it?’” The Talmud (Sanhedrin 21b) remarks: “Rabbi Yitzchak said when Solomon married Pharaoh’s daughter, [the angel] Gabriel descended and stuck a reed in the sea, which gathered a sand bank around it on which was built the great city of Rome”. The Soncino Talmud comments: “By this, his moral weakness, he laid the foundations of a hostile world, symbolized by the Talmud as Rome, which overthrew Israel”.

The kings from the dynasty of David tended to be good kings; even so they made good natured mistakes. King Solomon felt that marrying the daughters of foreign kings, would not only result in peace, but would cause many to learn the book of Proverbs as well. It was not successful. When Solomon was old, his wives turned his heart towards other gods and his he did not go fully after Hashem as did David his father (see Kings 1 chapter 11). In the book of Ecclesiastics (7:26) he laments, “I find more bitter than death the woman whose heart is snares and nets, her hands are bonds; whoever is good in G-d's sight will escape from her, and a sinner will be taken by her.” Solomon’s son Rehavam is not a bad king, but later on abandons the Torah (see 2 Chronicles 12:1).

The Meiri explains: David saw that his efforts to build the Temple would not succeed and the prophet Nathan told him that his son would build it; he gives him the advice and council typically given at the start of an endeavor. Even though good efforts are being made, he should not place his confidence in these efforts and not think that he will obtain his objective, because it will be obtained by his efforts. Rather everything is from the Almighty, and He arouses ones efforts and He allows one to obtain his objective. The Torah in fact had already cautioned about this when it said, “and you will say in your heart my strength and the power of my hand did for me this magnificence and you should know that Hashem your G-d gave you the power to do great things (Deuteronomy 8:17-8). It also says this generally, “If Hashem does not build the house”, meaning, there would not have been an effort from man’s side without [G-d’s] providence.

The Psalm then uses the labor a person puts into obtaining his sustenance as an example. Basically it says that a person can get up early in the morning and work late and his only gain will be bitter bread. It then continues that G-d will give his beloved sleep. Rashi explains this means that the Holy One Blessed be He will support those that banish sleep from their eyes to be busy with Torah. The idea is that hard work alone may only result in aggravation, but doing the will of G-d often produces satisfaction.

There is a hint that all of this is like having children i.e. many efforts may be fruitless and few efforts can be fruitful. He also praises having good sons and how valuable they can be, hinting that this should be important to him. The Yalkut Shemoni brings an anecdote that Rabbi Judah the prince sent Rabbi Chiyya, Rabbi Yosa, and Rabbi Ami to work in the cities of the land of Israel. There they were to establish in them scribes and students so that not a place would be found without a sofer and a student. They asked if there would be guards for the cities. He replied to them, “You are the guards and that those others do nothing except destroy the city. From where do we know that you are the guards of the city, because it says, “If Hashem does not guard the city useless is the diligence of the guard” (Psalm 127:1). Rashi sees sons of one’s youth as the students a man produces in his youth, as well as wise students that prevail over each other in halacha, who appear as if they are enemies of each other [when debating].

The lesson seems to be that when a person is engaging in a worthy pursuit their actions are the body of a success and the will of G-d is the soul of the success. If a person’s actions do not find favor in the eyes of heaven, they are likely to yield a blemished result. In terms of marriage a man can consider things like politics and positive influence on others, but the woman herself must be right. She should encourage her husband to go down a good path and certainly not the opposite. In addition the children she bears should be raised to be moral individuals who pursue wisdom.
