Emor / Omer: A Place for Everything and Everything in its Place

During the period between Passover and Shavuos we count the Omer. An omer is a sheaf of grain. Grain ripens with the onset of spring which is when Pesach falls. By Shavuos, which is half way through spring, we are generally receiving the first fruits. On Shavuos we also bake to loaves of bread from the new crop and offer them on the altar in the Temple. Counting the days is an expression of enthusiasm and expectation, therefore Shavuos is a happy time because it establishes that efforts in our livelihood have successful.

The Talmud also explains that the revelation on Mount Sinai occurred on Shavuos. Therefore in counting the fifty days from the exodus to the giving of the Torah, we are also counting the days from when we received our freedom, to when we received our mission as a nation. It takes more than freedom alone to be a member of a nation of rabbis. To succeed a person must know how the world works, to have a flexible mind, and to have a glimpse of the Creator.

To obtain these qualities the counting of the omer makes use of kabala. Each of the seven weeks represents one of the seven sefiros. For example the first week is devoted to kindness, the third to beauty, and last to dominion. In addition each day of the week represents a sefirah. Therefore on the forty nine days we permute the seven sefiros against each other. For example we pair strength with success and basics with prestige. In this way we develop creativity in ourselves and see the world as a whole and with its components.

The ancient art of alchemy has motifs like the ones used in kabala. For example in kabala there are three prime letters, seven double letters, and twelve simple letters. These make up the entire aleph-beis and are considered the totality of creation. In alchemy there are three prime substances, seven basic metals, and twelve chemical processes. To a certain extent they represent everything in the physical world. The sefiros on the other hand are the garments of Hashem and the seeds of the human soul.

Both systems tie their seven items to the seven principle celestial objects and their twelve items to the twelve constellations of the zodiac. One of the goals of alchemy was to change lead into gold by means of the philosopher’s stone. The philosopher’s stone had many wonderful properties among them an elixir of life. The search for it was considered a person’s magnum opus.

This is similar to the Sefer Yetzirah when in discussing the letter of the aleph-beis tells us to understand them, use them, combine them, and even change them. In this way we come up with new ideas and insights. In addition we should consider good and evil, beginning and end, and the four directions of the compass. If we are diligent we will recognize a creation’s place and function and how Hashem rules over everything.

This idea is alluded to in Ethics of our Fathers 2:3 where we are told that things like mathematics and gematrias are appetizers for wisdom but the study of bird’s nests (Kinnin) and menstruation are the body of Halacha. Mishnayos Kinnin starts by saying that birds can be brought as sin offerings or burnt offerings. It then explains the effects of birds flying from one nest to another. It can become very intricate especially when it computes the possible results of seven nests. It is an elaborate permutation. There are similar calculations in Yabamos when considering the effect of illicit relations involving complex family relationships.

The prime use, though, of the sefiros is to understand the nature of the soul and the will of G-d. This may be the true philosopher’s stone. The spiritual acumen we develop through this exercise allows us to transform grains of barley into fine wheat bread, elevates us from being slaves in Egypt to priests of the All Knowing, and teaches us how to open up the eyes of the blind and bring prisoners in darkness into the light of day.

Achray Mos / Kedoshim: Sign Between G-d and Israel

The haftorah for Parshas Achray Mos / Kidoshim is Ezekiel 20:2-20. It is a largely a rebuke and opens with Hashem rhetorically asking the leadership of the Jewish people if they are about evaluate Him and give Him a grade. The prophet continues that they should really evaluate and judge the atrocities of the nation’s past.

By and large Hakadosh baruch Hu is loath to punish the nation of Israel. Among the reasons is that when He took them out of Egypt his reputation became tied to their wellbeing, and Hashem desires that his repute should be great in the physical world. Therefore when Israel is in a low state, it is possible to err and think because it is due to the lack of strength of their Power, and not the nation’s lack of righteousness.

The gifts that G-d bestowed on the nation of Israel are pointed out. The land he gave them is the prize of all lands, one which is flowing with milk and honey. He taught the people etiquette and how to be fair. Finally he gave the Jews the Sabbath.

The land of Israel is considered the prize of all lands because it is the holy land and the land that is closest to Hashem. It is praised by calling it the land of milk and honey. Milk is considered healthy and honey is considered sweet. The idea is that the land of Israel, sanctity, and closeness to G-d should also make a person healthy and sweet. To reject the land of Israel is to reject the glory of G-d’s hands. To become sick and bitter in the process is considered a sacrilege.

Concerning the instructions of the Torah, one is told to keep them and to live by them (וחי בהם). This means that not only should a person’s conduct always be according to the law, but also that the Torah is what keeps a person alive. The external aspects are an orderly society and the benefits of cooperation. The internal aspects are inner vitality, sense of purpose, and peace with one’s surroundings. The basic idea is that living according to heaven’s law makes a person’s life better. Idolatry is basically alien values and strange behavior, which ultimately lead to human defilement.

The third gift mentioned is the Shabbos. Shabbos has three major components: ceasing from work, enjoying the fruits of our labor, and recognizing that the good we receive ultimately comes from G-d. However the essential reason for any good we receive is recompense for learning the precepts of the Torah and applying them to our actions.

On Shabbos we display what we have learned and the blessings we have received because of it. This is the idea is the Zohar that the Chumash begins with the letter “B” (ב) in Bereshis, because it is the same letter that starts bracha (blessing) and the world was created for blessings. From the Torah the blessings spread out to the entire creation. This is an aspect of a ray of light shining from heaven and spreading throughout a world of darkness. When people see on the Shabbos day the flow of blessings, they also see the flow of sanctity from G-d to the Jewish people, and this is the sign between the two of them.

Machar Hodesh: Count Your Blessings

When Shabbos falls on the last day of the month, the haftorah “Machar Hodesh” (מחר חודש), literally “tomorrow is the new month”, is read, because it contains this phrase. The phrase can also be understood as “tomorrow is new” and it is in fact the beginning of a new chapter in the relationship between David the shepherd boy and King Saul.

After Saul fails to kill the king of Amalek, the holy One, blessed be He, rejects him as king of Israel, and he is told so by Samuel the prophet. Shortly after this episode David the son of Yishai is anointed as king, but Saul continues to occupy the throne. When he is tormented by an evil spirit from Hashem, Saul is advised to bring in someone to play the harp and soothe him.

Shaul suggests David not only because of his excellence as a musician but also his renown in warfare, eloquence, and beauty. In addition G-d is known to be with him. When David is brought, Shaul loves him greatly immediately. After David slays Goliath, Saul’s son Jonathan loves David like his own soul and publicly garbs him in his own royal raiment and weaponry.

Things go very bad after David has a military victory so great that the women sing Saul has slain thousands but David has slain tens of thousands. Saul reasons what more can be given to him except the kingdom and from then on looks at David with suspicion. When Saul goes mad and conspires to have David killed, he flees. David then meets with Yehonatan and they discuss the situation.

It happens that the next day starts a new month and it is customary for the king to have a festive meal. David plans to be absent and tells Jonathan to explain to the king that David is attending a yearly dinner with his father and family in Bethlehem. If Shaul becomes angry then he is possessed by evil and no reconciliation is possible.

When Jonathan does what David suggested, Saul goes into a rage. He curses him and says that neither his succession nor his kingdom will be secure as long as David lives. He then demands that Jonathan deliver David to him to be killed. Jonathan, livid, and leaves the table.

He then secretly meets with David and tells him that the situation is beyond them. The two of them cry profusely. Jonathan tells David they should part in peace because they have sworn in the name of G-d that Hashem should be between them and their families forever.

Saul’s essential sin is that he could not accept the idea that his throne would pass to anybody other than his son. This is the reason he did not kill the king of Amalek and for his mad pursuit of David. The name Shaul literally means borrowed and Saul was so to speak a borrowed king leading to the dynasty of David.

Samson Raphael Hirsch praises Jonathan for succeeding, “in navigating treacherous shoals of power, privilege, family, and friendship while retaining his integrity, humanity, heart and soul. His story evokes a reevaluation of what it means to live a worthy life; too often we praise others only for worldly success and pay no mind to the spiritual costs”.

Others also had to deal with a similar test. There is a story in the Talmud (Brachos 27b – 28a) that when Rabban Gamliel acted very improperly towards the sages, they removed him from the post of rosh yeshiva. When they asked Rabbi Elazar ben Azarya to accept the position, he consulted his household. His wife advised him that Rabban Gamliel would certainly do teshuva and be restored to his rightful place and asked him if he could accept that. He replied that a man should use a fine cup for one day even if it is certain it will be broken the next day.

There is also the story of Rabbi Tzvi Hersh of Pinsk, who succeeded his father, the Baal Shem Tov, as leader of the Hasidic movement. The Baal Shem Tov appeared to Rabbi Tzvi on his first yahrzeit and said he should transfer leadership to his outstanding student the Maggid of Mezritch. The next day he recounted the dream in the beis midrash and found that the Maggid also had the same dream. With that the two of them immediately changed places.

It is explained in Ethics of our Fathers (6:5) that a person should not seek personal greatness more than his scholarship allows or envy the table of kings because their own table is better and the Boss will compensate them for their works. In addition the Gemara expounds on the verse, “everything is beautiful in its time”, (Ecclesiastics 3:11). It explains that everybody’s profession is beautiful before the holy One, blessed be He. Rashi comments this even applies to a tanner who must use the most disgusting of substances in his work. He continues that a person that goes into this type of work does not desire delicacies.

The point seems to be that a person’s greatest resource and source of pleasure is his unique soul. When he delves into what talents he has and what really makes him happy, he sees that there are things that are meant only for him; therefore is no need to chase after flashy things that belong to somebody else. There are many who would rather be the greatest rabbi, the greatest opera singer, or best football player, than the president of the United States. Others desire money, wisdom, health, beauty, truth, a wonderful family, or a loving wife. Sometimes all that is needed is for a person to count their blessings.
