VaYikra ויקרא: Expressing our Feelings Towards Heaven

Parshas VaYikra begins the third book of the Torah by the same name also called Leviticus. The subject of this parsha and much of the entire book is sacrifices. The conventional understanding of sacrifices revolves around the loss of something for a religious purpose. For example an animal is entirely burnt up as an act of sanctity. In fact the English word sacrifice is a form of the word sacred and in essence means something is being sanctified. The word in Loshen HaKodesh (the holy language; Hebrew) is korbon קרבן and the essential idea is that it is a vehicle to come close (קרוב) to G-d.

A number of sacrifices are described. They vary in purpose and form but they are all expressions of man’s relation with the Almighty. They can be for the purpose of showing dedication, regret, celebration, or expiation of guilt. Offerings of animals such as bulls, cows, sheep, pigeons, are common. The parsha also lists offerings of grain such flour, crackers, and luxion (Yiddish – noodle) kugel. All of them have associated rituals some of which are very elaborate. In all cases something is a burnt on the altar. With the animals suet and various internal organs are burnt. In addition the application of the blood to the altar is considered very important. With grain offering at least a token portion (less than a handful) is burnt.

The guilt offering specifically calls for verbal confession. This is a departure from the other sacrifices where the person expresses his feelings through the various rituals. The point of the guilt offering is expiation of guilt. As a result, something more than non-verbal melodrama is needed. This hints at the book of Psalms where the universe of man’s emotions towards his Creator are poetically expressed. One of the guilt offerings is a pigeon whose head is largely severed after which the body is pressed against the altar to squeeze out all of its blood. This is a symbolic dramatization of the idea that a person is squeezing out his entire life force in the service of heaven. Many psalms open with the line “for the conductor on the gitis” (למנצח על-הגיתית). Rashi explains that gitis was a musical instrument. It is also the word for wine press. So to speak the psalm is comparing a person to a grape and that which is best of him to wine. As an expression of devotion the psalm replaces the blood of the guilt offering for the last drop of wine that is squeezed out of a man. In both cases the idea is that through either exertion or pain the best is brought out in a person.

Today we are governed by the verse, “we will pay bulls with our lips” (ונשלמה פרים שפתינו) (Amos 14:3), meaning the formal liturgy of religious services, however the basic ideas of the sacrifices remain. Typically we do not relate to the practices of animal slaughter such as offering up its blood, and elaborate butchering of the carcass. Instead we related to poetry and song. As a vehicle to express our devotion, happiness, and regret, meaning is to be found in rhythm and rhyme and in chords and harmony. A major part of a celebration is a band where the melody may be pounded out on a piano to the accompaniment of a man blowing a horn. The idea of burning the kidneys on the altar with the lobe of the liver has lost its meaning and appeal. It would seem that humanity has become less blood thirsty and more literate.

The idea that we must give up something to come close to G-d still remains. In the Chumash this idea is expressed by the small amount of the flour offering that is burnt on the altar. Rashi explains that the minimum quantity for an offering of fine flour is an esaron (עשרון) which is about two and a half quarts or liters. Of this two fingerfuls of flour along with some incense are burnt on the altar. The rest is given to the priests. It amounts to a cash gift to those who have dedicated their lives to learning Torah and keeping the mitzvahs with a tiny amount used to make the point it is a gift to G-d. A gift creates a bond between the giver and the recipient. Because one works hard for his money it is as if it is a part of him. Therefore, through the giving of something of ourselves, we become close to Hashem.

Pekudey פקודי – Pillar of Fire

The Book of Exodus ends with the final erection of the Tabernacle. The construction of the Temple covers about four and a half of eleven parshas of this book of the Torah. It concludes with the cloud of Hashem covering the Mishkan and His glory filling it. The Chumash continues that Moshe was not able to enter the Temple because of the cloud and the glory of G-d (see Exodus 40:34-5).

This is similar to the dedication of Temple built by King Solomon described in the standard haphtarah of this parsha. The concluding act is the placement of the Ark of the Covenant in its place by the cohanim. When the priests leave the sanctuary it becomes covered with the cloud of Hashem and they are not able to reenter because the glory of Hashem fills the House of Hashem (see 1 Kings 7:6 – 12). Shlomo Hamelech explains that Hashem said that he will dwell in a thick haze (ערפל).

Likewise a thick cloud covers Mount Sinai just before the Ten Commandments are given (see Shmos 19:16). After this revelation Moshe enters into the haze (ערפל) where G-d is to be found (see Shmos 20:18). In an extreme example of this darkness Aharon the High Priest is cautioned against entering into the Holy of Holies lest he die because Hashem appears in a cloud above the cover the of the Ark of the Covenant.

On the other hand there are vivid accounts of visions of Hashem. With the giving of the Ten Commandments the people hear the voice of Hashem. A blood covenant follows in which Moshe, Aharon and his sons, and the seventy elders of the nation and see the G-d of Israel as if it is through the prism of a sapphire (see Shmos 24:9-11). In addition when Moshe ascends the mountain the glory of G-d appears like a consuming fire on its summit. There also are the visions of G-d on His throne with the heavenly court in attendance that were seen by Isaiah (chapter 6) and Ezekiel (chapter 1).

The Ramban explains that the glory of G-d is covered and concealed in the cloud and haze. In a similar theme the Kli Yakar explains that if not for the cloud it would be impossible to view the glory of G-d because it is a consuming fire. The prophet Yishiyahu adds a moral dimension, when after seeing visions of the Throne of Glory, cries out in fear that he is a man of unclean lips living among a nation of unclean lips. With that an angel touches his lips with a burning coal and says that his sins have left and his mistakes have been atoned for.

Psalm 97 describes a confrontation with Hashem. Cloud and haze surround Him and, righteousness and principle are the foundations of His throne. Fire goes out before Him and flame engulfs His antagonists. Mountains melt like wax before the Master of the Universe. Humiliated will be those that serve the illegitimate and take pride in illusions of power.

It is through this that we begin to understand the difficulties in approaching truth. So to speak we are kept in the dark because there are aspects of our personal life and national life that are not good. Approaching Hashem can mean acceptance of ideas and practices that initially we may not find pleasing. In exploring religion there is often a subtle recognition that dearly held positions may easily melt upon examination.

On the other hand some precepts and practices may be intimidating in their beauty. This may cause some to fear that they will be seduced into a direction they do not wish to go. To make matters worse there are truths that can destroy. For these reasons a person must be honest and level headed to ascend in holiness. There are some precepts and practices that are easy and can be accepted immediately. There are others that should only be viewed as distant stars even though they are very beautiful. There are still others that should be held in abeyance and investigated. In the end wise student will see that G-d protects the souls of those devoted to Him, that light is sown for the righteous, and to the straight of heart there is joy.

VaYakhel ויקהל – Enjoy the Creation

In parshas VaYakhel Moshe assembles the nation of Israel to charter them for the establishment of the Temple. However, before even telling them what the Temple is to look like, he admonishes them to keep the Shabbos. He declares that six days of the week are for working at their profession (מלאכה) but on the seventh day there is to be a decided cessation for Hashem. To add emphasis Moshe exclaims anybody doing work on Shabbos will die and they shouldn’t even burn a fire.

The commandment that Moshe gives to the children of Israel parallels the mitzvah given to Moshe by HaShem at the conclusion of the instructions how to construct the Mishkan. The commandment from Hashem is a bit longer and has both stern and gentle elements. It includes reasons though some of them are not so intuitively understandable by flesh and blood. We are told that Shabbos is a sign between Hashem and Israel and a vehicle through which we will know that Hashem sanctifies Israel. The penalty for work is estranged from the people. G-d concludes the mitzvah by saying that Shabbos is a sign that He made the heaven and earth in six days and on the seventh day took pleasure (וינפש) from His labors.

After properly relaying the musar about Shabbos, Moshe itemizes the components of the Temple and the priestly raiment. This passage forms the basis for the Mishna (Shabbos 7:2), “there are forty less one principle crafts”. The crafts fall into four basic categories, production of bread, cloth garments, leather, and construction. The Gemara explores the word forty and asks what the missing trade is. Several explanations are brought one of them is the trade of Yosef. The verse concerning Yosef’s labor in the house of Potiphar (Genesis 39:11) is brought. It would seem that the profession of Yosef was that of a butler, auditor, and an administrator in charge of running the master’s plantation. It does not look as if he got his hands dirty. This hints that engaging in activities for the sake of profit, that are not otherwise forbidden, may be undesirable, but permissible in certain circumscribed situations.

From these passages we learn something about the nature of Shabbos observance. The most fundamental prohibition of labor is for the ordinary production of articles for normal physical uses such as food, clothing, and shelter. The exhortation not to burn a fire on Shabbos is the source of consideration discussion. All of the commentaries reject the idea of a blanket prohibition on fire in favor of sitting in the cold and eating cold food. Rather there is an elaborate body of law dealing with what should and should not be done with fire. The Rambam goes so far as to use this verse as the source for prohibiting application of punishments of Shabbos, something that is not a literal use of fire. Lighting a fire is in fact counted as one of the 39 forbidden crafts. However, there is a discussion whether this verse (Exodus 35:3) is its primary source.

Fire though is a major tool for production. For example a fire is needed to bake bread and also to heat water for dyeing and laundering. It seems that the prohibition against burning a fire is essentially a prohibition for preparing to do any craft on Shabbos even though the craft was not actually done. Under the halacha preparing for weekday activities on Shabbos, if not forbidden outright, is at least restricted and greatly frowned upon.

A difficulty arises when the objective of the work done is not so much the laborer’s sustenance but rather for the community good particularly to aid in Shabbos observance. Because construction of the Temple is forbidden on Shabbos one can infer no production is permitted on Shabbos. Therefore nobody can say his work is so important that it takes precedence over the Shabbos. In extreme situations where human life is at stake all work is to be performed, a number of rationales some apparent others not greatly are given. In situations where the absence of a particular activity will cause pain or serious inconvenience it is often permitted but only in convoluted way and sometimes with legal fictions given to justify it.

The issue of a hobby for example a flower garden is illustrative. One could argue that watering, weeding, or fertilizing such a garden does nothing for a person’s parnasah. They do, though, involve a degree of bother, which really is not Shabbosdik. On Shabbos a person should enjoy their garden, look at the flowers and admire their beauty, and try to see the hand of Hashem in their garden as well as remnants of His six days of handiwork. Through this we can understand how Shabbos is like the Temple. By resting on Shabbos and partaking of the blessings that have come to us from Above, we recognize and explicitly give thanks to the Creator. In the case of Temple we bring a sacrifice to express the same thought.

Of at least equal importance to the idea of rest on Shabbos are the concepts of recreation (וינפש), the relationship between G-d and Israel, and a cultivated belief that G-d created the world in six days. This means that cessation of work is not enough, rather one should enjoy the day off as well. As a result a person should specifically do things that give them pleasure. However part of the day should also be related to religion. Desirable religious studies would be ones that emphasize the interaction between Hashem and the Jewish people.

The issue of the creation of the world in six days is more complex. The Chumash testifies that G-d created the world in six days. However we may not see it that way in our own minds. It would seem that the Torah is saying that we should delve into this belief with the assurance that we will ultimately see its truth. For those that really do see it the Chumash encourages us to develop this belief until we can see it in detail in the physical world.
