V'Eschanan ואתחנן – The Greatness of G-d

In parshas V'Eschanan Moshe rabenu asks G-d to permit him to enter the Holy Land. He begins his prayer by saying, "You have begun to show your servant Your Greatness (גדלך), Your strong arm, what Force is there in heaven or earth that can make like Your deeds and Your might" (Deuteronomy 3:23). From this parsha we learn something about Hashem's greatness.

The most common use of the word gadol (גדול) is Loshon HaKodesh is "big", however it often means celebrated and famous i.e. great. The word is used a number of times in this reading notably after the recollection of the giving of the Ten Commandments, when the nation says to Moshe that G-d has shown them, "His glory and His greatness", (Devarim 5:21). Greatness is expressed repeatedly when Moshe exhorts the children of Israel to keep the laws of the Torah. It is your wisdom and your understanding in the eyes of the nations, who will hear all these statutes and say, these people are only wise and understanding, this great nation. For what is a great nation -- one that has God so near to it, as Hashem our God is at all times that we call upon Him? And what is a great nation -- one that has all these righteous ways and laws like this Torah, (cf. Devarim 6:6-8).

The Torah and the law that is given in it are both great in and of themselves as well as manifestation of G-d's greatness. There are effectively three expressions of G-d's name in Moshe's prayer. The first one is frequently understood as "Lord". This is an expression of being a ruler and anyone who rules has an aspect of greatness. The second name is a pronunciation of Elokim meaning power and power likewise is an aspect of greatness. The spelling of this name is an expression of providing existence, without doubt very great. The prayer continues with examples of greatness. A strong arm refers to military might. A force in heaven means wisdom and righteousness. A force on earth is physical power. Might refers to control and forbearance.

In Psalm 46 we get a look at G-d's greatness through the prism of war. He changes the earth, causes mountains to totter and the sea to storm. Simultaneously He is a stronghold and close to the devout on at the time of turbulence. He shakes up nations, cripples kingdoms, and wreaks devastation on earth. He stops wars, breaks the bow, shatters the spear, and burns their carriages. He will be exalted among the nations and exalted on earth. He is a fortress to the children of Israel and all of his devoted.

In Psalm 139 we see G-d's greatness through his omniscience. You know where I dwell and where I stand, You understand me from a distance. You know every word on my tongue. You know what's in back of me and what's ahead of me. If I should ascend to the heavens, You are there, and if I should make my bed in the grave, behold, You are there. Darkness hides nothing from you, night is like day. Your eyes saw my unformed body, in Your book is written all of my days.

In Psalm 144 we see G-d's greatness through His benevolence. Our sons are like saplings big in their youth, our daughters are like lace woven like a sanctuary. Our granaries are full, our herds are many. Our leaders work hard. There is no breach or cry in our streets. Happy is the nation that this is so. Happy is the nation that Hashem is their G-d.

Teaching Torah

In parshas Devarim Moshe rabenu starts to explain the law to the children of Israel. The book Devarim is also called Mishna Torah משנה תורה. This literally means "reviewing instruction" and is the route of the English name of this book, Deuteronomy. From it we receive hints how to teach Torah to others as well as how to learn it ourselves. Various themes are intertwined such as the conquest of the Holy Land, suggesting that they are conceptually related.

The Chumash starts by giving their location in the wilderness as just outside the land of Israel. The same verse mentions the names of places that do not exist. The commentaries explain the names hint at various sins the people committed in the past but with a thin veil of concealment. The short distance from Egypt to their current location is noted inviting a contrast to the long period of time they have been in the desert. The wars with Sichon and Og are also described.

We can infer from this that a person who is about to learn is like one who is in the wilderness but on the border of holiness. In order to learn past errors must be righted, but the teacher should only gently remind the student of these mistakes. The eleven days normal travel time between the two locations indicates how easy the material can be to learn if done properly. The forty years actually spent in the desert tells us how damaging blunders can be. In any case there will be battles to be fought. However, when we prevail there will be a rich reward.

Moshe tells the people that they were aggravating, quarrelsome, and obstinate, particularly in their refusal to enter the Promised Land forty years earlier. This is said within the context of him rallying the nation to conquer the land of Israel now. The Ramban explains that this was to let them know that HaKadosh Baruch Hu is merciful and patient. Therefore people should not say that it is impossible to keep the law and that they will constantly be punished. We learn from this that in education a person must be also patient and take the long view of things. There are certain concepts which are difficult to absorb. However with persistence and time they will be learned.

The Ramban comments that the first phrase, "These are the words that Moshe spoke to all of Israel", (Devarim 1:1) refers to the repeating of Ten Commandments later on (Devarim 5:6 – 18). In fact the repetition is slightly different from what was said on Mount Sinai. This tells us that when teaching something we should give it over in our own words and gear it to the people who are listening.

Moshe opens saying that they have dwelled at Mount Sinai long enough and the time has come for them to enter the Promised Land. He then describes its various regions and exhorts them to advance to the Euphrates River, far beyond its borders, and reminds them that this is the land that was given to their forefathers. Moshe then blesses the people that they should become populous and be like the multitude of the stars in heaven.

The idea of leaving Mount Sinai for the land of Israel suggests that there is a time to depart from the classroom and apply the knowledge acquired there to real life situations. We should know the various components, strive for greatness, and be mindful that this is a heritage from our fathers. The teacher should desire that the knowledge of his students should be as high and numerous as the stars in heaven.

The Ramban explains that Moshe's introduction ends with the verse, "You shall keep His way of life and His laws, which I am commanding to you this day, so [|He] will do good things for you and your children after you, and that you may have length of days upon the land which the Lord your God is giving to you forever", (Devarim 4:40). The idea is that through keeping the mitzvahs good things happen to a person and their household. Therefore learning should be viewed as something that one receives a great benefit from.

The Chumash says that "Moshe was pleased (הואיל) to explain the Torah", (Devarim 1:5). The Ramban explains that this means that he was happy to do it and did it on his own initiative. We learn from this that a when teaching religious values the teacher should believe them himself and desire to instill them in his students.

Damage Control

At the end of parshas Matos the tribes of Reuven and Gad ask Moshe to permit them to settle in the lands seized from the Amorite kings Sichon and Og. They explain that this territory is good for raising livestock and they have a lot of livestock. The lands are outside the Holy Land, adjacent to its eastern boundary on the Jordan River. Moshe does not like the request and asks them, "Are your brothers going to go to war while you sit here?" He then compares them to the spies who did not wholeheartedly follow Hashem and disheartened the children of Israel from entering into the Promised Land, bringing disaster upon the nation.

In a sincere reply the two tribes propose that they be the ones to spearhead the attack on Canaan and remain there until every man has received his portion. After the disposition of all issues concerning warfare and settlement, they will return they will return to the Transjordan, which will be their permanent heritage. Moshe accepts their proposal and even includes half the tribe of Menasha in it.

In his final discourses Moshe greatly praises the land of Israel. It's the prize of all lands, it has great natural resources, the eyes of G-d are upon it at all times. However the Chumash records no argument as to why these tribes should make what is really a superior choice. On the contrary Moshe when recalling this deal mentions that he knows they have a lot of livestock.

What we have here is an exercise in damage control. It foreshadows Moshe's address to the nation shortly before he perishes, starting with thinly disguised rebuke. Rashi explains (Devarim 1:3) that this is like Ya'akov avinu who only Reuven, because he laid with Bilah, on the day of his death chastised out of fear that he would join Esav if reprimanded earlier.

Reuven the son of Ya'akov and the two and a half tribes did in fact remain committed to the faith, even though there were flaws. In the case of the two tribes there was an inordinate emphasis on money. In addition they only wanted to be close to the land of Israel not to actually live there. However, they wanted to be a part of the nation of Israel and were willing to go out of their way to show their devotion. Plus they accepted Moshe's leadership and were willing to accept his advice. As a result it was appropriate to accommodate them in this issue.

We learn a number of lessons from this. How to graceful concede an issue is one of them. In dealing with matters of religion it is important to recognize that people are on various levels and in some situations a widely accepted precept may be very difficult for a segment of people. In a potential crisis things must be kept in perspective and one should recognize where concessions can be made and where they can not. It is important to have an honest dialogue; however overwhelming intellectual pressure should not be applied. It is not worth losing everything by clinging to a precept where there is room to be lenient. Rather, it is better to accept a situation that is less than ideal, so as to preserve much, including the hope that in the future things will improve.
