VaEra / Mikaytz - Expanding the Mind

When my eyes first became opened to the greatness of the holy Torah, HaKadosh Baruch Hu sent me the distinguished rabbi Eli Chaim Carlebach זצוק”ל to shepherd me through the ways of tshuvah. He came from a major rabbinic family who were famous for their wisdom and devotion. Eli Chaim was a ben bayit of the Lubavitcher Rebbe Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn and married his beautiful niece, Hadassah. His brother was the popular singing rabbi, Shlomo Carlebach.

Like many chozrei b'teshuva I was filled with religious enthusiasm, and I believed that the truths of the holy Torah were so strong and apparent that they simply stood by themselves. Not only that I believed any powerful truth would stand by itself and that presentation and certainly not the clothes of the presenter made any difference.

Rabbi Eli Chaim with his years of experience knew was not true. He knew my feelings were firm so he started to correct me gently. It was parshas Mikaytz and he quoted the verse, “Pharaoh sent a messenger and called for Joseph, and he was quickly brought out of the dungeon; and he shaved and changed his clothes, then came to Pharaoh”, (Genesis 41:14). The rabbi then posed the question, why did the Torah mention something so mundane and trivial like dressing up and taking a shave. He explained that when you see a big man about something important you must look the part. With a rasha like Pharaoh if you look like a slob and don't smell so good, he may throw you on the floor, say interpret the dream, then put you back in jail. The hint was that the beautiful truths of the Torah should be beautifully presented.

We see that also in parshas VaEra. Moshe brings the happy word of HaKadosh Baruch Hu to the children of Israel saying that He has heard their cries, is taking them out of the sweat shop called Egypt, giving them the land promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. However, they don't listen to him because of being short spirited and because off hard work.

Rashi explains that the children of Israel were so overworked that they could not even take a deep breath. As a result they had despaired of ever being redeemed and could not accept consolation. Nachmanides comments that they did not lack faith in God or His prophet. Rather they didn't pay attention because they were constantly in pain, fearful of getting killed by Pharaoh, and always under pressure. The Sforno says that they did not contemplate on what they heard from Moshe and that to believe at this point in the salvation of the Almighty would have been an act of charity.

It says in the Talmud (Brachos 57:) three things expand the mind of a man: a nice apartment, a nice wife, and nice possessions. Not only that if a Jew wants to be taken seriously he needs a nice suit, a nice beard, and a nice hat. It comes out if a person is subjected to things like crude loudspeakers, blaring jackhammers, garbage all over the place, and obnoxious neighbors, it will impair his ability to learn Torah. Subtle truths may fall on deaf ears and hopes for a happy future may sound like foolish fantasies. On the other hand a comfortable home, lovely family, and a nice neighborhood opens the mind to high heavenly wisdom, and to the visions of the prophets of a wonderful world to come and allows him to share these insights with others.

Shmos - Gate of Tears

Moshe rabbeinu is born at the time Pharaoh has told the Egyptians to throw all the new born baby boys of Israel into the river. His mother hides him, then in what seems to be an act of desperation, puts him in a basket and floats him away on the Nile. Unexpectedly the daughter of Pharaoh retrieves the basket. When the baby cries she has pity on it and adopts the child even though she knows he is a Hebrew.

The commentaries give several reasons why an Egyptian princess would behave in such and unusual way. Nachmanides comments that he was  crying like a child, sharply and vigorously, therefore she had pity on him. The Seforno comments that when she opened the basket and saw him, she saw that he was good and very handsome. The Gemara (Sota 12:) states in the name of Rabbi Yossi the son of Rabbi Hanina that she saw that he presence of God was with him. Tikunay HaZohar comments: You should know that all of the gates are locked, but the gate of tears is not locked. But, there was no one who could open for us these gates until the master of tears came, as it says, “She opened it, and she saw the child, and behold the boy was crying”, (Shmos 2:6).

We would think that a baby that the whole world is against would be powerless. But we see that this was not true. In spite of his parents giving up on him and a hostile society, HaKadosh Baruch Hu was still with him and gave him the power of tears. With this he could exhibit his other good characteristics and not only save his own life, but the lives of many others as well.

We also see this characteristic with Yosef the tsaddik. His brothers threw him into a snake pit, sold him as a slave in Egypt, and mockingly said, “we’ll see what comes of his dreams”, (Genesis 37:20). A person can say that Yosef will be powerless to do something about this, he will be a slave in Egypt. Instead Yosef became ruler of Egypt and the brothers were placed under his thumb. This is like the Yiddish expression, man proposes and God disposes.

The Chumash is explicit that HaKadosh Baruch Hu watches over the weak. It commands Israel, “Do not mistreat or oppress a foreigner, for you were foreigners in Egypt. Do not take advantage of the widow or the fatherless. If you do and they cry out to me, I will certainly hear their cry. My anger will be aroused, and I will kill you with the sword; your wives will become widows and your children fatherless”, (Exodus 22:20-23). Rashi explains: You shall not oppress any widow or orphan - The case applies to all people, but the Scripture speaks of the usual situation, since they [widows and orphans] are weak therefore care frequently oppressed. - [From Mechilta].

The Torah teaches us that there are spiritual forces in the world. There is a force of righteousness, a force of rectification, and a force of retribution. These forces are revealed by means of the abuse and subsequent rectification of the disadvantaged. Even an infant can have power. It takes some depth to see the hand of God in this and unscrupulous brutes are often blind to this. In the end the righteous will walk in the light of true wisdom and, “rejoice when he sees revenge; he will bathe his feet in the blood of the wicked. And men will say, “surely there is a reward for the righteous; surely there is a God judging the world”, (Psalm 58:11-12).

VaYigash / Hukath - Serving the King

In the beginning of the famine in Egypt the people came to Yosef and bought food paying for it with gold and silver. Yosef took all of the money and gave it to Pharaoh. Next they gave him everything they owned. The final thing the people did was give their land and sell themselves as slaves to Pharaoh.

In doing this they were not bitter at all, rather they were very thankful especially to Yosef and said to him, "You have saved our lives! Let us find favor in my lord's eyes, and we will be servants to Pharaoh”, (Genesis 47:18-19). There is room to say that if the people were thankful to Yosef they should have agreed to be his slaves and not Pharaoh's slaves. However, they correctly saw that Yosef was doing all of this for Pharaoh. He didn't want them to be his servants, rather he wanted them to be Pharaoh's loyal, obedient workers. Therefore the thing that would really please Yosef was for them to be good Egyptians who properly served their king.

From this we can understand the sin of Moshe rabbeinu, may he rest in peace. During Israel's wanderings in the desert, after the death of the sister of Moshe, the community finds itself without water. The people quarrel with Moshe because of this, so he inquires of Hashem. Hashem tells Moshe to speak to a rock and it will copiously flow with water for them and all of their needs. Instead he angrily calls them rebels and hits the rock.

The holy One, blessed be He, then says to Moses and Aaron, too, as you did not  believe in Me to sanctify Me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this congregation to the land which I have given them, (see Numbers 20:12). Rashi explains that had Moshe spoken to the rock and it had given forth water, it would have sanctified God in the eyes of the congregation. They would have said,"If this rock, which neither speaks nor hears, and does not require sustenance, fulfills the word of the Omnipresent, how much more should we!

King David in Psalm 106 deals with the bad incidents of Israel starting by saying, “We have sinned with our fathers, we have abused and been evil”, (verse 6). The verses concerning this are difficult. The language does require some thought, but the real difficulty is that the description of what happened is so inconsistent with the personality of Moshe. It seems to be saying they provoked him at the quarrelsome waters and Moshe became bad because of them. They had changed his spirit and he told them what he really thought, (see verses 32, 33).

In other words because of all the aggravation, Moshe went sour. His job was to imbue the nation with sanctity so they could properly serve Hashem, but now he could no longer do it. As a result he could not handle a major task like bringing Israel into the Holy Land.

The prime motive of the Torah is to teach the Jews. The hint of Yosef and the starving Egyptians is that the leaders of Israel should only desire that the people be proper servants of their king. And who is the true king of Israel? --- HaKadosh Baruch Hu. This means that if a Jew wants to impress his rabbi, teacher, boss, or big political leader, he should just be a proper Jew.

Proverbs 4:3 - A Loving Father

The fourth chapter of Proverbs continues its regular themes. Some of the verses contain new ideas. Others are fundamentally restatements of the theme of the importance of wisdom especially as an instrument of religion. The approach is to make an impression by means of repetition. Repetition is often boring but can be pleasant if done properly. An example would be Psalm 136 which has 26 verses, all ending with the phrase, “for until forever is His kindness”. Here repeating something the reader likes and believes is pleasing.

In Proverbs the lesson is that a great amount of wisdom, which is very deep, will strengthen a person's belief in God and His Torah. Also the greater the knowledge, the  greater the faith. Knowledge is a friend and ally not something that will make a person into an apostate. However the reader may need many reassurances on this, especially if the idea is under attack. As a result this theme is repeated often, at least in the opening chapters.

Proverbs frequently addresses the readers as sons. In chapter four verse three the author refers to himself as son who received this instruction from his parents saying, “For I was a son to my father, tender and [like] the only one, before my mother”. Rashi explains that this means that the author was the son that was more beloved. As a result the quality of the advice itself and education used to convey it was the best possible and given in the spirit of tender love.

The motive is to increase the credibility of the advice and exhortations that are given. Not only is this King Solomon himself speaking, but he is recounting his upbringing from his father, King David, as well as his education in the royal palace. Even more so Solomon was reckoned by the holy One, blessed be He as His own son and trusted to build the Temple as it says, “He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish his royal throne forever. . . . I will be a father to him, and he shall be a son to Me”, (2 Samuel 7:13-14). We are given a glimpse of being raised in the palace of the king and if it is possible to perceive with Hashem as our father.

This knowledge was imparted during the susceptibility of childhood and accompanied by parental affection. Therefore it is seen as having surpassing intrinsic excellency, cherished in the heart, and to be retained at all costs. The Malbim explains that the musar that is received from one’s father is very selected and valuable because the father wants to hand down good direction to all of his children. This is even more so to his favorite who has been entrusted with things that are lofty and important.

The Midrash Agada comments, “says HaKadosh Baruch Hu, many precepts I have commanded upon you; and for what? Rather it is to give you merit. I said to you to take the red heifer. Was it for me? No, rather it was for your purity. I said to you take to me donations. It was for you so that I should dwell in your midst. I said you should take pure oil. Do I need the light? I did it for you so you should protect yourself. For the soul of a man is like a candle as it says, “The candle of God is the soul of a man”, (Proverbs 20:27).
