On Monday, 19 September, 23 Elul, attending with my study partner Shmuel, I went to a lecture by Rabbi Dr. Yitzchak Breitowitz. Rabbi Breitowitz is a senior lecturer at Yeshiva Ohr Somayach, Jerusalem. He is the former rabbi of the Woodside Synagogue in Silver Spring, Maryland, and associate professor of law at University of Maryland. He received rabbinical ordination from Ner Israel Rabbinical College and his law degree from Harvard Law School. The sermon was held a short distance from my apartment at a yeshiva in the Kehilas Yirey Hashem M3 (קהילת יראי השם) synagogue.
As a preface he started with mentioning the first Rosh Hashanah after the Jews returned to the Holy Land after the exile in Babylon as described in the book of Nechemia. Sometime later he digressed into a discussion of the prayer וּנְתַנֶּה תֹּקֶף (Unasana Tokef). The title is difficult to translate and the best I could come up with is, “And Validated”. Rabbi Breitowitz emphasized its use of the theme, “Repentance, Prayer, and Charity pass away the bad of the decree”. He noted that the exact language is used in the Jerusalem Talmud. The Babylonian Talmud adds changing your name and changing your place. An attempt was made to reconcile the two passages which melded with the concept of the unity of Israel.
Rabbi Breitowitz then moved onto the body of his sermon saying that he wanted to make four points. The first is that Rosh Hashanah is the anniversary of the creation of Adam the first man as described in the book of Genesis. The second point was that we should be thankful for another year of life.
Third he went into a discussion of the mishnah that a shofar can be made from the horn of any animal except a cow. He recounted the traditional explanation that an accuser cannot be a defender. Because a cow recalls the sin of the Golden Calf it cannot be used to plead for mercy on the Jewish people. For the concluding fourth point he made use of the expression, “return on investment” mentioning its modern use and how it applies to the Days of Awe. He said that at this time the Holy One, blessed be He, considers the rate of return on all human beings and with that He makes a decision what will be their lot for the coming year.
